World Cup 2018

The World Cup is my favorite sporting event.

When the 2018 version started I was, so excited to watch the 32 teams compete through as many as 7 games through 5 rounds of elimination.

Then, I became frustrated by ESPN and other sports outlet limiting tournament progress to tables, rows, columns, and flags moving through brackets.

This is a global competition featuring entire nations - let's look at it their progress on a map and point a light to what fans care about most - goals!

Click on a country for total goals scored, or on Qualified/Eliminated to see who is still fighting for the Cup.

This is a rolling passion project that I first started on 6/17 and approach through mini sprints ranging from 15 minutes and up to 3 hours, resulting in 15 iterations as of July 4th, 2018.

Data was scrapped from ESPN into Google Sheets using =IMPORTHTML. Once imported, I manually standardized and enhanced the data, then used IFS to assess if a team was qualified, pending, or eliminated in group stage.
