Ron Wellman earned seven varsity letters in Football, Basketball and Baseball while at Wilbur Wright. He was a two-time All-City selection in both Basketball and Baseball and was team MVP in both sports his senior year. He attended Bowling Green State University where he earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees and was a stand-out pitcher for the Falcons Baseball Team. Wellman joined the faculty and coaching staff at Elmhurst (IL) College in 1971 and later served as Athletic Director for five years. Following his successful career at Elmhurst, he became the Head Baseball Coach at Northwestern University for five seasons. He was appointed Director of Athletics at Wake Forest University (WFU) in October, 1992 and has since played a major role in the shaping of Intercollegiate Athletics on a Regional and National level. He has served as the Chairman of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship Committee, NCAA Division I Management Council and NCAA Baseball Committee. In 2007-08, Street & Smith's Sports Business Journal named him College Athletic Director of the Year and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics selected him as its AstroTurf AD of the Year for the Southeast Region for the second time in his career. He also received the Prestigous Homer Rice Athletic Director Award before retiring from Wake Forest in May 2019.
