Belmont became the ninth member of the Dayton City League after joining the league in 1956. At the time, many students in the Belmont district had the opportunity to attend either Wilbur Wright or Belmont for high school. Prior to that the school had served as a junior high since the late 1920s. Despite the tough decision that many families faced, most parents decided to send their kids to the newer Belmont High School. The Boys Track Team was the first team to have athletic success for the school sending two athletes to the State Championship Meet in Columbus in 1960 & 1961. Pole Vaulter Dave Dull finished fourth in the state in 1960 and George Brose was State Runner-Up in the Mile Run the following year in 1961. In 1966 the Mile Relay Team had a strong showing at the state meet, finishing third behind state runner-ups Cleveland East Tech and Akron Buchtel. The Boys Basketball Team under Coach John Ross was the school's first team to have historic success. Coach Ross was a Pioneer in developing a premier high school basketball program. When Belmont High School opened in 1956, he was promoted from an elementary coaching position to be an assistant basketball coach under R.C. (Skip) LaRue. Ross became head coach in 1961 and won back-to-back city championships in 1963 & 1964 and the school’s first ever Class AA State Basketball Championship in 1964. The State Championship Team won the state semifinal and final games by 24 and 29 points, respectively. The Bison went (26-1 for the season) with their only loss coming in a hard-fought overtime game against Chaminade where both Bill Hosket and Don May fouled out. Hosket and May were the first teammates ever to be named first-team All-Ohio. Bill Hosket was also was named Ohio Class AA Player of the Year and MVP of the state tournament. Coach Ross was named the Ohio High School Coach of the Year in 1964. The Belmont 1964 Team is still considered one of Ohio’s Greatest High School Basketball Teams was inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013. In 1965 the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) re-established the state Gymnastics Tournament after 28 years. During this period, Belmont Gymnastics Coach (Ed Jones) had quickly developed one of the most competitive gymnastics programs in the state. He coached both the girls/boys teams and won six city league championships and three district titles throughout his career. As a result of his coaching skills and ability to develop all-around gymnast his boys team captured the school's second State Championship in 1967 and finished in the top ten at the state tournament five times between (1965-69). The 1967 team was led by star gymnast Ernie Armstrong who won the All Around Title (finishing first in the parallel and horizontal bars, third in the floor exercise, tied for fourth on the long horse and finished fifth on the still rings). Other gymnasts scoring points in the championship meet included Dan Farhmann (3rd Place Side Horse), Charles Faires (3rd Place Trampoline) and Calvin Imhoff (3rd Place Horizontal Bars). It took almost ten years before another Belmont Track athlete would qualify for the State Meet in Columbus. High Jumper Bruce Hodge made back-to-back appearances in 1970 & 1971 and finished second in the state after clearing the bar at 6'6" in 1971. Between 1965-1975 the Football Team won a share of seven City League Titles including back-to-back Championships in 1965-1966. Coach Mike Ledford led the Boys Basketbal team to two District Titles in 1976 & 1980. Zach Payne & Bob Pratt led the 1976 team to the school's first Regional appearance since in 1964. The Bison's were defeated in Regional Semi-Finals by a score of (74-55) to eventual State Champions Middletown Middies. In 1980, Belmont Athletics had one of its most successful athletic seasons in the school's history. The Boys Basketball Team advanced to the OHSAA State Tournament Regional Semi-Final game, Jeff Borda coached the school's only indivdual State Gymnastics Champion and the Boys Track Team had a state runner-up finisher. The Boys Basketball team was led by Darryl Dancy, Tony Graham, Martin Bayless and Glenn Tindall. Penny Booher claimed the OHSAA State All-Around Gymnastics Championship. The Boys Track Team benefited greatly from the closures. In 1983, Football standout Kevin Ringer finished 3rd in the 200 Meter Dash (22.26) and 6th in 100 Meter Dash (10.89) at the State Meet.
Despite the influx of new students from several competive districts across the city, Belmont would not see significant success of the any sports teams until the early 1990s. The Girls Track team qualified two athletes for the 1994 State Track Meet in Columbus. Sprinter Candace Branham finished third in the 100 Meter Dash (12.33) and Merressa Cornwell placed fifth in the Shot Put (38'8 1/2) and eighth in the Discuss Throw (124'7").
