Helen Thayer is a modern day adventurer, who along with her husband live a life dedicated to accomplishing goals, such as walking across the hottest, most barren desert in the world. On all of her adventures, Helen carefully prepares for the journey by learning from the locals, whether it is the Inuits on her solo ski trek to the magnetic North Pole or the Mongolians during her journey across the Gobi.

The Thayers' meticulous planning of their expedition was a large part of its success. They plotted out the water and food needed to survive the days in the desert, and broke the trip into four parts, allowing for a resupply plane to meet them at junctures. The couple delved into the culture of the nomads that lived in the desert (not to mention the politics of walking so close to the heavily guarded Chinese border), and they kept up a punishing training regime.

After 71 days walking in the desert, the Thayers reached the end of their journey. Touched by the nomads who had let them into their homes with so little to offer, they sent food, clothing, and supplies back to the families they had met along the way.

There are a couple in here that are primarily walking, but also include other human-powered methods like biking, running, or canoeing. If you want some more outdoorsy books, check out my national park novel list too!

Levison Wood is a walking maniac. This is just the first on this list of four of his long walks. In this, he walks the length of the Nile from Rwanda to Egypt, 4,000 miles across six countries, over nine months.

His 860-day journey forces him to face deforestation firsthand and the pressure on the tribes he meets. If you want a story that is more about the walking, this is a great option. I read this one a few years ago and it was pretty interesting.

The hike is overall easy to moderate. The only aspect that makes the hike difficult is the loose dirt. Be careful while walking along the trail, especially on any uphill portions, as the loose dirt can cause you to slide.

The tourist camps are also located in the middle of the steppes. There is nothing in walking distance (typically not even other tourist camps). Therefore come prepared with books or other activities to do in the evenings as there is no nearby attractions or businesses.

But how did they possibly do that? Just as we're told: by walking. Walking and walking. And there lies the weakness of Peter Weir's film, which is nobly staged and has breathtaking cinematography but frankly, not enough of a story in the vulgar populist sense. Desperation and exhaustion make it difficult for the trekkers to work up much in the way of characters or conflicts, and while that no doubt spares us many cliches, we are left during their long walk with too much of a muchness.

The song's existence was first hinted at on November 27, 2020, when the comments "hold aloo" and "hold aloo gobi" were found in the metadata of tracks released as part of Alone XII: The White Year. Rivers Cuomo later confirmed the song's title to users of Riverchat and uploaded a photo of the song's sheet music as his profile picture on riverscuomo.com.[2] The tracks from Alone XI: The EWBAITE Years labeled "pretty great piano melody" from February 2013, as well as several acoustic sketches dated March 13, 2013, were eventually used as the instrumental bridge for "Aloo Gobi".

We walk down toward the Tsetserleg River and we make a long lunch break along its banks. Swimming is possible, especially in June, July, and August. After our break, we leave for 3-hour walking along the river. We turn to our left and go over a pass, before walking down towards a lush valley, where we set up our camp.

We stop to get a closer look at the sand dunes near their highest elevation, spending time walking in the dunes. Great photo opportunities, and the more adventurous travelers might want to scale the dunes. At this time of year and in late afternoon, the temperatures should be moderate for such an exercise.

Starting in the Gobi desert in winter, adventurer Rob Lilwall sets out on an extraordinary six-month journey, walking almost 5000 kilometres across China. Along the way he and his cameraman Leon brave the toxic insides of China's longest road tunnel, explore desolate stretches of the Great Wall and endure interrogation by the Chinese police.
