Levi Celerio

(April 30, 1910 – April 2, 2002) 

Levi Celerio was a highly esteemed Filipino composer, lyricist, and National Artist for Music (1997). Born in Tondo, Manila, Philippines, Celerio showed an early aptitude for music, learning to play various instruments and honing his skills as a lyricist.

Throughout his prolific career, Levi Celerio wrote over 4,000 songs and composed music for numerous Filipino films. He was known for his versatility, creating music in various genres, including folk, classical, and popular music. Some of his well-known compositions include "Sa Ugoy ng Duyan" (lyrics), "Kalesa" (music and lyrics), and "Ang Pasko Ay Sumapit."

One of the most remarkable aspects of Celerio's talent was his ability to play music using a leaf as a wind instrument. This unique skill earned him recognition in the Guinness World Records as the only leaf player in the world. Apart from his contributions to music, he also wrote poetry and was an accomplished journalist.

Levi Celerio's impact on Filipino music and culture is significant, and his legacy continues to be celebrated. He passed away on April 2, 2002, leaving a rich and enduring musical heritage in the Philippines.
