Meet your Clinic Coordinator!
Clinic Coordinator: Lora Smith
About Lora: For many years I walked the Vancouver Sun Run on my own and hurt when it was over because I didn't prepare. When people asked why I didn't run it I complained that my knees bothered me too much to run and I would never be able to do it. Then at a BBQ in the summer of 2008 I was with a group of InTraining leaders who were talking about their morning runs and it sounded like they had a lot of fun together so I asked if I could join them. They were very encouraging and said yes I was welcome to join them. In 2009 I ran the Vancouver Sun Run for the first time and have been involved in the InTraining program ever since. First becoming a leader, then as the Coordinator for Renfrew Park. Because of the InTraining program and the wonderful, encouraging people involved in it, running has become an integral part of my life. I've completed 2 full marathons, many half marathons and many 10k runs. The study of fitness has became important to me so I also completed the weight training certification through BCRPA and have taken some general fitness/nutrition courses. I believe that a person does not need to be obsessed with fitness 24/7 in order to be healthy but instead live an active lifestyle and eat good quality food.
How long have you been involved with the InTraining Program? 9 Years
What is your favourite InTraining memory? We had a older lady join us who had never run before. She did the LearnToRun10K program, and after the Vancouver Sun Run was over decided that she would keep it up. Six months later she ran a half marathon and to my knowledge she has continued to run and another year later she has plans for another half marathon.
Favourite place to run/walk? Central Valley Greenway
What can participants look forward to this year with the Renfrew group? Every Saturday morning we will begin by spending some time on learning about different running related topics such as safety, nutrition and running gear. We will also have a few special speakers drop in throughout the season. After our opening discussion our experienced LearnToRun10K and Run10KStronger leaders will guide the group out into the Renfrew Park area for our run/walk session which will be followed by a cool down session. After our cool down is complete we welcome everyone to stay for coffee. This is a great opportunity to connect with others who are interested in becoming more active and to create lasting friendships. As a side note we do usually do 2 or 3 road trip sessions were we meet offsite. Rides can always be arranged for those who need transportation.
What participants have to say about the Renfrew Park Community Centre Group:
"I doubt I would have ever become a runner without the clinic. I really like the gradual nature of it and attention to detail. I am in better cardiovascular shape than I've ever been before. Prior to beginning, I was easily out of breath within a minute of exertion. Not at all anymore! Even after a half hour or more. I can take this training with me and apply the steps to other areas of my fitness and life. So, thank you!" - Marta, Renfew Participant
"Our Leaders were enthusiastic, supportive and caring. The fact that they were open about their own early challenges in learning how to be runners was useful and helpful." - Renfew Participant
"It has been an awesome experience! Training with others helped me to stay motivated & focused on race day. Highly recommend!" - Julie, Renfrew Participant
