Meet your Clinic Coordinators!
Clinic Coordinator: Pamela McLeod & Susan Gratien
About Pamela: I have been an elementary school teacher for the last 32 years. I love the feeling of being active. I am not a fast runner, but I love the idea of "personal best" and how my body feels when I move. I do a Pilates class each week. I like to cross train (swimming, biking, running) to prepare for a sprint triathlon each May, so the Sun Run training fits well with that. I coach a large elementary Cross Country team in the Fall each year, with students in Grades 4 - 7, so supporting adults to set and achieve their personal fitness goals through the Sun Run training program seems a logical extension to this.
How long have you been involved with the InTraining Program?
Pamela: I have participated in the Sun Run In-Training program for as long as I can remember - first as a participant, and later as a Run Leader. I particularly love working with those who have never before thought of themselves as "runners", to encourage them and support them to cross that finish line with pride and a sense of accomplishment in April. I believe in the power of the Sun Run In-Training clinics. The progression through the walk-run program is logical and realistic, and there is magic in the support which comes from belonging to a running group. I found a running partner at a Sun Run clinic, and this has been key to my success in continuing to run. We run and talk together regularly and we motivate each other to get out and move - even when the weather seems less than optimal. It has become a part of my identity.
What is your favourite InTraining memory?
Pamela: Last year, we had several newcomers to running registered for our clinic. One participant in particular was quite anxious about whether or not she could actually complete a 10K as she had never done anything like this before. She was a larger woman, and she shared with me that she just could not imagine that her body could take her that distance. However, she trusted and committed fully to the program. She got herself some proper runners and a good running jacket, she showed up for every clinic, and made sure she followed through with the program each week, moving as slowly as she needed to to complete the distance. I loved seeing her face at the end of each running session, as she always seemed so surprised and proud that she had completed it! I met up with her at the end of the Sun Run last year in BC Place and asked how it went. She said, "I got to the finish line, and felt like I could have kept on going!" WOW! Now THAT is more than a "high five" moment; it was truly inspirational for me! I can't wait to help someone else experience that personal best.
Favourite place to run/walk?
Pamela: Oh, goodness... ANYWHERE in North Vancouver is a favourite place to run! However, I love all of the forested trails and paths between streets in the area east of Seymour. There is always a new and lovely route to do!
What can participants look forward to this year with the Parkgate group?
Pamela: Our running clinic has heart and great enthusiasm! We are a very supportive clinic, with a group for runners of all levels of ability and experience, from those who are starting to run for their very first time to those who are aiming to clock a sub-45-minute 10K! What I love is that regardless of what group we are in, we are ALL runners. We are a team. Getting yourself moving, and setting a personal fitness goal - in a supportive, flexible environment - is one of the best resolutions you can make. GO for it! Come join us at Parkgate Community Centre!
