The world today is facing increasingly severe environmental issues, such as extreme heat, severe cold, droughts, and floods, which are affecting human life more frequently. In response, the Buddha's Light International Association Vancouver Fang Guang Subchapter has included tree planting as part of its "Environmental Protection and Heart Care" annual initiative, with the hope of contributing to environmental improvement.
On October 26, 2024, during late autumn, 10 members from Fang Guang Subchapter participated in the annual fall tree planting event organized by the City of Surrey at Sullivan Park. City officials noted that Surrey plants trees in both spring and autumn, with different species planted each season. The fall planting event is typically larger in scale. While many believe that autumn marks the end of the growing season, it is actually the opposite. Fall is an ideal time for planting trees, shrubs, and other plants because it allows the roots to establish themselves before the hot summer months of the following year. Additionally, the autumn rains and cooler weather reduce the stress on newly planted trees, as they are not exposed to intense sunlight.
The event took place after several days of heavy rain, making the ground muddy and difficult to navigate. Every step sunk deep into the mud, making it hard to move around. Additionally, the thick layer of fallen leaves under the trees added to the challenge of digging. However, this did not dampen the enthusiasm of the volunteers. Everyone, stepping through ankle-deep mud, dug holes to plant the young trees. Even when encountering large tree roots underground that made it impossible to finish digging a hole, the members remained undeterred, relocating to dig elsewhere until the trees were properly planted.
In two hours, the members planted dozens of trees. These trees were not just symbols of environmental care but also reflected their sense of social responsibility, love for nature, and hopes for the future.
