Hockey Club

The Valley Vixens are a women's ice hockey club located in the inimitable Methow Valley, WA. Every fall, Vixens come down from their summer foraging grounds to convene at one of the most magical places on Earth, the Winthrop Rink.

Winter is for hockey, and hockey is for Vixens.

Welcome to the Fox Den

Our purpose is to promote hockey skill development for women in the Methow Valley. We are a volunteer-run club and strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for women and non-binary players. We are here to skate hard, have fun, and get better at hockey!

The Vixens were "officially" born (i.e. we made some sick jerseys) in 2021 by a core group of women who had been play drop-in together and competing in tournaments for many years before that. Since then, our numbers have grown, but our desire to get better at hockey, play hard, and have a blast doing it hasn't changed.

Club Framework

Vixens have a weekly practice lead by our incredible coaches. Practices focus on skill development, hockey IQ, and fitness. We also put together teams to play in the Winthrop Rink's women's tournament with the hope that all Vixens who want to can play.

Practices start in early November and the season wraps up at the beginning of March. We facilitate 14 x 90-minute practices and one local tournament. There are options to play in lots of other regional tournaments too, but the club Commissioners don't organize those.

New Player Expectations

The Valley Vixens strive to be an inclusive and welcoming women's hockey club. However, due to our limited ice time and coaching bandwidth, the club is not set up to be an introduction to hockey for those who are brand-new to skating.

Women and non-binary players who are new to the best sport on earth should take an adult learn-to-play (LTP) clinic (check the Winthrop Rink for schedule) and have 2 seasons of LTP, drop-in, or other hockey experience before seeking to join the club. Exceptions are occasionally made on case by case basis if we have space on the roster.

Cost to Join

Cost to join fluctuates from year to year based on ice time costs, roster, and coaching fees but is typically around $300, not including tournament fees, jersey/socks order (one-time purchase), or USA Hockey registration (required annually). Goalies play at a significant discount.

Interested?

Currently, we cap the club roster at 35 skaters, plus goalies. Any more than that and the rink is too crowded for our coaches to plan an efficient practice. In a typical year we might have turnover of 2-4 players. Some years we may not have roster space to accommodate any new players.

Tournaments

Nothing beats a women's tournament for fun and hijinks on and off the ice. As a club, we organize two teams to participate in a local tournament at the Winthrop Rink (the women's Joyful Jamboree, typically held at the end of January). That tournament has a guaranteed 4 games played over 3 days and we typically try to field two relatively balanced teams.

There are many other opportunities for regional women's tournaments. Anyone who wants to play in another tournment besides the Joyful Jamboree (which the Commissioners will help facilitate) is encouraged to find one, get a team together, and make it happen. Reserve a spot with the tournament organzier and then build your roster however you like.

Some of our favorite tournaments over the years have included Joyful Jamboree (local), Great Outdoors Classic (hosted locally, but organized by the Greater Seattle Hockey League), Hot Autumn Ice (Wenatchee), Kiss My Ice (Wenatchee), Crazy Canucks (Kelowna, BC), Puck Place Market (Seattle), Seattle Frozen Pride Classic (hosted locally, organized by Seattle Pride Hockey League), and many more.
