L'ho soccorsa e quando ha ripreso coscienza l'ho accompagnata in un bar per offrirle un tonico. Ho avuto modo di scoprire così che non mangiava da alcuni giorni, che faceva ostinatamente la fame perché non aveva il coraggio di chiedere soccorso a nessuno. [...] come si fa a essere fautori dello stato stazionario in queste condizioni? Come si fa a pensare al proprio diritto alla solitudine? Finché ci saranno essere umani che, come la signora del filobus, tireranno a campare appesi al filo fragilissimo della propria indigenza io credo che nessuno di noi abbia il diritto di innamorarsi di ipotesi come quella di cui parla Stuart Mill."

"Do you know what happened to me today? I should like to tell you, because I believe it bears upon what we are reading. As you know, I come to the University by trolleybus, the number forty-seven, usually crowded though this morning more crowded than usual. In front of me stood an elderly lady who stepped off, not without difficulty, at the same stop. Scarcely had she set foot upon the pavement than she collapsed, unconscious. I went at once to her assistance and, when she recovered, accompanied her into a café where I offered her a restorative. There I discovered she had eaten nothing for several days, that she had quietly gone hungry because she could not bring herself to ask anyone for help. [...] how, in such circumstances, can one advocate the stationary state? How can one think of one's own right to solitude? So long as there remain human beings who, like the lady from the trolleybus, live suspended by the frailest thread of their own indigence, I believe none of us has the right to become infatuated of hypotheses such as that of which John Stuart Mill speaks."
