The Master Genealogist (TMG) is genealogy software originally created by Bob Velke for Microsoft DOS in 1993, with a version for Microsoft Windows released in 1996. Data entry was customized through the use of user-defined events, names, and relationship types. Official support for TMG ceased at the end of 2014.[1][2] Informal support continues through a number of online user groups.

TMG has elaborate and detailed support for sources in a database format where a source can be referred to by any other record. In the GEDCOM database specification, sources can be attached to any number of individuals or multiple families, by attaching to any number of facts for that individual or family. Exporting a TMG database involves duplicating the sources into each place where a given source is used. All of the information is exported, but the structure of each source is lost permanently.

By default, GedSite omits excluded citations. Excluded citations are marked by a single hyphen (-) at the start of the source number in TMG's Citation window. If you enable this checkbox, excluded citations will be included.

When using the Sentence Tester, or when reviewing GedSite's application log, you may notice that sentence templates imported from TMG use role numbers, not role names. So, for example, you would see "[R:00005]" in a template and not "[R:Son]". This is normal and does not indicate a problem.

Internally, TMG stores role numbers ("00005") in place of role labels ("Son") in sentences and memo fields. TMG hides the role number from you: when you edit a sentence, TMG replaces the role number with the label, and when you press OK, it looks for role labels in the sentence or memo and changes them to the role number.

TMG uses role numbers for several reasons. TMG supports multiple languages, and the role labels vary between languages, but the role numbers do not. So, in English you would use "[R:Son]", but in French you would use "[R:fils]". When TMG (or GedSite) is interpreting sentences to build narrative text, it sees the "[R:00005]" value and knows that refers to the Son/Fils role. Also, if you change the label for a role, TMG does not have to update any sentences or memo fields that refer to the role because the role number does not change when you change the role label.

The tmg-languages.xml file should be created in the Documents\GedSite\Languages folder. You may add multiple entries, but increment the number in the culture code so that all the culture codes in the file are unique.

Biography and Genealogy Master Index is a reference standard for libraries. It allows you to quickly determine where to find biographical material on people from all time periods, geographic locations, and fields of endeavor. Biography and Genealogy Master Index is unquestionably the best place to begin your search for biographical information. It indexes current, easily accessible references sources, as well as important retrospective works that cover individuals, both living and deceased, from every field of activity and from all areas of the world. The total number of biographical sketches indexed now exceeds 17 million citations and points to more than 2000 publications, covering over 5 million people. Biography and Genealogy Master Index contains names, birth/death years, and bibliographic references to books containing material on that person and an indication of which books or articles include a portrait.

TMG was an excellent program in its time and ranked highly in the eyes of many experienced genealogist. For various reasons Wholly Genes the publishers have now stopped producing this program. TWR discontinued selling and supporting the program in 2013 due to the difficulties in supporting the program on Windows 7. We were also disappointed in the lack of new development to the program and could see that most development appeared to be sorting out issues surrounding the continuing use of the program in the ever changing Windows operating system.

Further, users who have converted to Windows 10 have reported installing and using TMG 9 on it successfully. The issue with Windows 8 with repeated requests to enter the ID number, remains, and appears as a new issue for Windows 7 users. The solution is described in my article on moving to a new computer. Some issues with folder permissions and saving reports as PDF files have been reported. See the TMG 9 section of the Wholly Genes Forum for discussions and solutions.

So there is no need for TMG users to do anything quickly, and a number of users have declared their intention of staying with TMG as long as it works on their computers. For those planning to transfer to another program, delaying the transfer offers the potential for a more trouble-free transfer with less loss of data. Not only might direct transfer become possible, but other developers may decide to enhance features to entice TMG users to adopt their program.

If you obtained a copy of TMG on a CD, it is most likely useless. Unless you verify that it is the lasted edition (or if it has the serial number written on it, which you do need) you may as well throw it away. The reason is that the free updates which you should have installed if you originally had an early edition included changes in the data file formats, so your Project files will not open if you install an earlier version with the CD. You do not need to install an early version and run updates. The current installers will install a full fresh version.

The installation file should be kept in a location on your computer where it will be part of your backup routine (see my article on Protecting your Data) or at least copied to external media stored in a safe place. Place a copy of your serial number, and if there is any question the associated email address, in a text file and put that in the same place. I think saving these two files in a safe place is important. If you are not comfortable doing so I recommend enlisting your favorite technical support person (grandchild?) to assist.

If you do not have a copy of the email from Wholly Genes with your serial number you can obtain a copy which you can cut and paste into the text file by using the Help > Technical Support command, and on the screen that appears, clicking the "Trouble report" button. Choose the option to open the report in your word processor, and your serial number and the associated email address appear a few lines from the top.

If you are using a version earlier than TMG 9 I recommend you now upgrade to the current version while that opportunity remains. It has a number of helpful new features and includes a number of bug fixes. Further, it seems likely that as other developers provide direct import capability your transfer is likely to be most successful when working from the latest version of TMG. The installers for the US and UK editions can be downloaded from the links above. There are at last report one source of ID numbers, which are required to use TMG 9 past the 30-day free trial:

By taking these steps you should be able to continue to use TMG for a considerable number of years if you choose to. If you choose to transfer to another program these steps should keep your TMG installation in good health until you find and adopt a suitable replacement. The next section discusses some considerations involved in making such a transfer.

Wholly Genes, the developers of The Master Genealogist (TMG), announced in late July 2014 that the decision has been made to discontinue The Master Genealogist. A number of people have since written asking what they should do.

By default, the program files for each version of TMG are installed in a separate location from earlier versions if one exists on the computer. The default is C:\Program Files\The Master Genealogist v#, or, if you have a 64-bit version of Windows, C:\Program Files (x86)\The Master Genealogist v#, where "#" is the version number being installed. If you choose a different installation location than the default, be sure to not use the same folder that was used to install an older version if there is one installed on your system.

After installing TMG on Windows 8 ro 10, or upgrading to Windows 10, they are often asked to enter the unlock code (serial number) even though they have done so before. This is caused by a change in a security feature introduced in Windows 8 and continued in Windows 10. The solution is as follows:

This edition is issued to reflect changes in The Master Genealogist with the release of Version 8. While a substantial number of useful enhancements were included in that release, the majority of them fall outside the scope of Primer. As a result, the changes in this edition of the book are modest. Only a few sections have been revised because the description in the text differed from the operation of the new version of the program. In addition, a number of screenshots have been updated to reflect new buttons or labels on the associated screens.

TMG and FTSTOnline: Many users of TMG and FTST enjoy the benefits of the TMG or FTST mailing list as a way to discuss how to use the program to its best advantage. These discussions are with other users both beginners and experts and all in between. For more information and how to subscribe (free), check outthis page.

My personal home page contains a number ofTMG-created pages that TMG users may find interesting.

The Centre for Lifelong Learning offers a number of eight-week courses available both online and on campus. These are intended to provide the basic skills and knowledge required to facilitate progression to the Postgraduate Certificate/Part-time MSc Year 1. Successful completion of one or more of these courses may serve as evidence of the necessary study skills and/or relevant genealogical experience. be457b7860
