Mayank Vahia

I am Mayank Vahia, Dean School of Mathematical Sciences at the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies.

I used to be in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research until 2018. At TIFR I worked on Satellite based telescopes that went up on American, Russian and Indian Satellites. I then got interested in issues related to Science and Society such as, the History of Indian Astronomy, Evolution of Scientific Thought and impact of Science on Society. I was also the Founder of the Indian National Astronomy Olympiad which has been running for 20 years and bringing laurels to the Nation. I am ready forever to talk to students.

During my research career, I have published more than 250 papers on high energy astrophysics, history of science , archaeology, science and society etc.. I have also written 3 books and edited 3 more.

At NMIMS, I have started the new School of Mathematical Sciences. Some features of the School are:

About the philosophy of the School

1) Our school offers BSc Mathematics (Honours) as a 3-year course.

2) We teach Mathematics as a language.

3) During this period, we largely teach Mathematics only and there are no subsidiary subjects except for personality development.

4) In the first two years we teach pure and applied Mathematics in equal measure.

5) In the third year we give them an option of choosing any field of human learning and then, with a qualified teacher, we help them learn how Mathematics is used in their field of interest. The choice may include anything from fine and performing arts to social and physical sciences as well as commerce.

6) This gives students who love Mathematics to understand its full beauty with a special focus on something else also that they like.

7) Our moto is: “If you like Mathematics and nothing else, come to us”.

8) Our teaching approach is – “Think Mathematics” and “Think in Mathematics”.

Regarding admissions:

1) We take a separate direct application and are not going through the NPAT.

2) Students with 75% in Class XII Mathematics and 75% in Class XII aggregate (or equivalent for other boards) will be eligible to apply.

3) Students from any stream can apply as long as they have taken higher mathematics in Class XII (or equivalent) examinations.

4) Based on the applications we will create a merit list based on 50% weightage to Class XII Mathematics and 25 % each to Class XII aggregate and Class X Mathematics.

5) The fees will be around 1 lakh per year
