Education for All

Survivorship goes far beyond the trauma that occured, finding its roots in the systems that oppress us. Power and control have been used to control marginalized communities since colonizers first landed in the U.S. and abroad. Sexual and interpersonal violence is a tool that has been utilized by colonizers and modern politicians alike, and until systems that mobilize these types of violence are destroyed, it will continue to harm our communities. It is the responsibilty of everyone to educate themselves on the complexities of survivorship and be an active ally.

The nearly 2,000 items span the entire period of the university’s history, but concentrate mainly on the period from 1950-2015. They document not only incidences of sexual violence at UVa but the culture of the university surrounding rape, assault, and women’s and LGBTQ rights, and the intersection of sexual violence with race and racism."
