Study Abroad Course in Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands

The Biology Department and the Center for Environment, Biodiversity, and Conservation at the University of Texas at Tyler invite you to join us for a study abroad course in Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands in May 2020. The course will be led by Dr. Joshua Banta, Associate Professor of Biology and Director of the Center. We will be abroad May 17th - 31st, 2020, and there will be an online component to the course in preparation for the trip. If you are a biology major at UT-Tyler, you may count this course towards one of your core requirements (Group III). If you are not a biology major, or if you are not a student at UT-Tyler, you are still welcome! Please contact Dr. Banta ahead of time to discuss your biology background and the expectations for the course; you could take the course without a letter grade. How to apply (UT-Tyler students):

1) Start by talking to Scott Lapinski in the Office of Financial Aid (, and do this ASAP. He can increase your loans to cover everything. The course costs $4,500 plus another $1,300 in tuition and fees ($5,800 total). Your loans will cover the entire trip and the tuition and fees.

2) Scholarships will be awarded later in the spring, after the program deadline. If you receive a scholarship, you can return some of your loan money later.

3) The next step is to wait until you have the money. Once you have the money, you should visit with Cynthia Martinez in the Office of International Programs ( She will have you fill out an application to commit to the program.

4) Note the new deadline for payment in full: February 15th.
