And Uttama villain, whatever subtexts and meta references and angles you may read into it, is ultimately, IMO a piece of rotten filmmaking replete with LCD elements and cliched humor and yet managing to be utterly unentertaining. Rarely has a Kamal movie bored me to death as much as this.

I also liked the fact that he did not choose to end the climax by dying while acting the last scene of Uttama Villain. That would have been the classic plot line, the most tempting. But instead he chose to die inside an operation theater while his family, near and dear ones are laughing watching his final act. That was most poetic.

secondly Kathakali is more a sombre art form while theyyam is more ferocious and more suited for climax of the picture.especially in staging of the iraniyan nadagam- I am in no way discounting the great stories of war like duryodhanavadham,kiratham or keechakavadham that are extremely well staged through kathakali, but still i find the romantic tales like subhadraharanam or uttaraswayamvaram more delightful.Repeat totally my POV.

B, the title could apply to almost all the major characters in the movie right? As in there are no black and white characters but only shades of grey. Manoranjan, Chokku, PCR, Vara, Arpana all of them may have committed mistakes but did so thinking they are doing good. On the other hand, Senguttuvan/Uttaman is actually a good guy who schemes for a good end. The only out and out evil characters are Mutharasan and his minister but even here Kamal makes us laugh at them rather then be repulsed by them. More like muttaal villain. Shades of MMKR.

I agree with you that direction could have been slightly better. But o boy, what a brilliant screenplay. I happened to watch birdman after this movie and was very underwhelmed by birdman as the layers of uttama villain made birdman look like a single dimensional puppet show.

#UttamaVillain: Yes, you will get teary-eyed if you connect with it. There are a few lows, but when you eat the fruit, throw away the seeds.

#UttamaVillain: A decent first half which shoots up big 15 mins post interval. The climax is the trump card, deserves a standing ovation.

#UttamaVillain: Immortal classic. A highly emotional film which has been pulled off with subtlety. Ulaganayagan is here in style!

Undoubtedly, Kamal Haasan is the biggest plus for this film. His performance as an dying superstar is tremendous and will hold you emotionally. There are certain scenes during the climax which will bring a lump in your throat. The way Kamal portrays his controversial life and showcases his comedy timing as an Theyyam artist is pretty good.

Intelligently, the Iraniyan Naadagam will finish with Narasimhan dying. Is that Narasimhan? No. It is the end of Mutharasan, the Villain within Manoranjan. So Prahalad accepted Iraniyan the villain implying Manonmani accepted Manoranjan as her father whom she considered as Villain.

The movie ends on a sad note, with Manoranjan dying, but he achieved immortal status by doing a comedy movie which audience enjoyed thoroughly. His children loved him, his wife, his driver, his father in law, his guru, everyone loved him, and the movie ends with Arpana revealing the news of death to his children, while others are having a hearty laugh watching climax of Uttama Villain. Ends without a fuss of everyone crying for him

On the flipside, Komban lacks a strong climax which cools the mercury on what could have ended the film on a high. With jarring, noisy BGM which is flicked from Mankatha, the fag end of the film is loud and dragging. But looking at it aerially, it is an enjoyable flick which plays to the gallery.

There are 4 directors associated with this movie -- Balachander, K.Vishwanath, Ramesh Aravind, and ghost director Kamal. It is clear what must have been the role of Kamal Haasan in the direction front. Ramesh Aravind should be credited for handling the comedy portions very well. Scenes individually are engaging during the first half. The dialogues are intelligent, witty and poignant. The movie proceeds at leisurely pace to set the right platform before it reaches the interval. However, the journey to the climax during the second half is bumpy and not compelling enough. Ramesh Aravind as the director could have stepped up to his plate during the making by calling the "cut" after the scene is long over. He could have worked with the editor to trim down the scenes at the editing table. Probably, his hands were tied due to the reverence the director may have for the actor Kamal. 2351a5e196
