Some reflections from my preparatory stage of the PhD — insights and lessons I wanted to share from my own experience navigating research directions and finding the right academic fit.
A PhD is an incredibly rewarding but demanding journey — one that tests not only your knowledge, but your patience, adaptability, and sense of direction. Choosing the right topic and research environment is arguably one of the most important decisions you make at the very beginning.
When I began planning my PhD applications, I realized that the hardest part wasn’t writing the statement or securing references — it was identifying what I truly wanted to study and who I wanted to study it with. Over time, and through a lot of trial, error, and reflection, I developed a process that helped me find clarity. What follows is not a fixed formula, but rather an experience-driven approach — something that evolved as I moved deeper into research.
1. Start with Review and Theoretical Papers
It’s tempting to dive straight into empirical studies, but I’ve learned that starting with theory saves you a lot of confusion later. Review articles and theoretical papers help you understand how different ideas connect — they show you the “big picture” of your field, not just isolated findings.
If your area of interest is broad (say, “language and cognition”), it helps to look at review papers from roughly the last four years to get a sense of recent trends. If your area is more niche (say, “cross-linguistic influences on word learning”), you might need to go back seven or eight years because developments in smaller areas tend to be slower.
Review papers often summarize competing theories, common criticisms, and methodological challenges. They also point you toward the key empirical studies worth reading next.
2. Map the Open Questions
As you read, you’ll notice that every field has recurring debates — and these debates often exist because of different kinds of gaps. Over time, I found it useful to categorize them into a few broad types:
Theoretical gaps – Competing frameworks trying to explain the same phenomenon, or a missing unifying theory.
Conceptual gaps – Vague or inconsistently defined constructs (for example, “attention” or “motivation” used differently across studies).
Methodological gaps – Issues with existing paradigms, tasks, or measures; or a lack of ecological validity.
Population gaps – A field focusing heavily on one demographic (e.g., Western adults) while ignoring others.
Analytical or statistical gaps – Overreliance on certain methods (like p-values) without alternative analyses or robustness checks.
Interdisciplinary gaps – When insights from one field (say, linguistics) could meaningfully inform another (say, cognitive neuroscience) but rarely do.
You don’t have to find something entirely new; even recognizing how existing gaps interrelate can give you a better sense of where your interests naturally fit. I learned this the hard way — I initially tried to “find a new question” too quickly, without fully understanding how older questions evolved.
3. Identify the People Behind the Ideas
Once you start seeing recurring debates or themes, certain names will appear again and again. These are often researchers driving those discussions — the ones proposing, revising, or challenging the dominant ideas.
Instead of only checking citation counts, look at who leads which line of thought. In many academic fields, especially in psychology and neuroscience, the last author on a paper is usually the principal investigator (PI) or lab head. Visiting their lab websites gives you a sense of ongoing projects, current students, and broader research directions — which is often more useful than reading one or two isolated papers.
Personally, I didn’t always reach out to researchers immediately. Often, I would first try to understand their body of work across 3–4 papers before realizing what I actually wanted to ask or discuss. That process — even when done imperfectly — helped me articulate my own interests more clearly.
4. Read Empirical Studies Strategically
Once your theoretical foundation feels reasonably strong, start reading empirical work — but do it selectively. Instead of consuming hundreds of random papers, focus on clusters of studies from the same lab or on the same debate. Many labs publish series of papers that explore a question progressively through slightly different angles. Seeing how one idea develops across multiple studies is far more valuable than reading isolated findings.
When you read empirical papers, pay attention to:
What the key manipulations and dependent measures are.
How the authors justify their design choices theoretically.
Whether the results are consistent across methods or populations.
If two papers have the same results — why? What is similar between them, and what differs? If two papers have conflicting results — again, why? What changed? (This was a suggestion given to me by a very senior professor I spoke to at a conference.)
Reading this way helps you understand why studies are designed as they are, not just what they found — something that’s crucial when you begin designing your own research later.
5. Revisit and Refine Your Understanding
After a few months, it helps to pause and look back. What ideas consistently draw your attention? Which debates do you find yourself wanting to resolve? By revisiting your notes or summaries, you’ll often see your interests converging around certain types of questions or approaches.
At this point, you’ll likely have:
A clearer understanding of the theoretical landscape.
A better sense of where your perspective fits in.
Awareness of what kind of research methods appeal to you (behavioral, neuroimaging, computational, etc.).
For me, this step didn’t happen in a single “aha” moment. It was more gradual — each round of reading and reflection clarified my interests just a bit more.
6. Reaching Out Thoughtfully
Reaching out to potential supervisors or collaborators can feel intimidating, but it becomes much easier once you’ve done the earlier steps. You don’t have to know their entire body of work — a well-read and thoughtful message referencing one or two relevant papers can go a long way.
What matters is showing genuine curiosity. Instead of saying “I’m interested in your work,” explain why — what specific question or method resonates with you, and how your background connects to it.
Even when professors don’t reply, this process itself clarifies your thinking. Every email draft you write helps you articulate what exactly excites you about the field.
Final thought
This process isn’t fast or perfect — it took me several rounds of false starts to realize what I truly wanted to work on. But those imperfect steps were necessary. Each wrong turn taught me something about the kind of research I value, and more importantly, why.
If you’re trying to find your research direction or planning to apply for a PhD, don’t worry about doing everything in the “correct” order. What matters is consistency — reading deeply, reflecting often, and letting your understanding evolve naturally over time.
