In Utah, personal injury claims are governed by specific statutes of limitations that determine how long a victim has to file a lawsuit after an injury occurs. For most personal injury cases—including car accidents, slip and falls, and other negligence-based incidents—the statute of limitations is four years from the date of the injury. This means that if a lawsuit is not filed within this period, the injured party may lose the right to seek compensation.
However, there are exceptions. For wrongful death claims, the statute of limitations is two years from the date of death. If the injury claim is against a government entity, a formal notice of claim must be filed within one year, and a lawsuit must be initiated within one year after the claim is denied.
