Applied Math can mean a lot of different things to different people but here at JAMS we keep the definiton intentionally vague. Applied math describes any type of mathematics being used to solve real world problems!
Appropriate topics for this seminar can range from PDEs in mathematical physics to data science and machine learning. If you are unsure if your topic is a good fit, feel free to consult the organizers. The point of the seminar is to expose graduate students and post-docs in the department to a variety of ways that math is being applied so even if your topic is not typical for the seminar doesn't mean it wouldn't be interesting to hear about!Â
Feel free to check out the abstracts from past semester to get some inspiration for a topic idea. We just ask that all talks are accessible to a general math audience. In other words, your audience will have a baseline understanding of mathematics and some basic principles of applied math but you should not assume that they are an expert in a specialized area of applied math.
