Each Friday classes would eagerly look to the bulletin board for the lists of duty stations, they would be assigned to. Some of the ones I remember were, Adak, Iceland, Ireland, Morocco, Vietnam, etc. Most RM's desired the shore duty stations, as some of them were travel brochure names we dreamed of When ours came, it seemed most of the class went to the Atlantic fleet or European continent North Africa, Ireland etc. We were especially interested in what type ship we would go to. Some of the "Old Salts" (Seamen who had served some time on a ship before coming to Bainbridge), wisely informed us of what type to wish for, to get the best duty, or action. I was saddened to find my orders sending me all alone to a remote place, that none of my classmates were going: - Taipei Taiwan, United States Taiwan Defense Command. The "Old Salts" were yelling, and slapping me on the back, saying "Man did you luck out!!!" Usually one or two from each class were sent to Swift boats in Vietnam, where the attrition rate was high, as stated by RM1 "Hook", our typing instructor. (I wish I could remember the instructor's names). My instructors: I recall one who was married to and oriental girl, and would often describe to us how great Chinese food was, and how he never ate anything else, since getting married. Another instructor would regale us with tales of how he left the Navy to go back to civilian life. We would howl at the funny stories he would tell us of trying to drive a car in town (due to driving very little for years while in the Navy).
