The growth and popularity of urban sketching and sketch walks have brought the practice of on location sketching to the attention of landscape architecture programs and practitioners. Both the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture and the American Society of Landscape Architecture have hosted lectures, discussion panels and sketch walks as an academic and practical form for groups to explore, discover and discuss the value of sketching. This has initiated a global discussion on the role of sketching, recording direct observations, mapping and social media sharing in the teaching of design.
The recently published Design Democracy: Techniques for Collective Creativity, highlights several community drawing and sketching activities that document space and initiate the process of analysis and conceptualization. The sketchwalk for example can engage instructor, student and practitioner in an operation that contributes to the design of urban spaces. The roots of sketching as a practice of documentation and analysis are rich, having roots in the British tradition of travel sketching, the socio-political discourse of Situationist thinking, and Gordon Cullen’s process of serial vision, to mention a few.

Title: Mapping and Sketching Kuching
Kuching, a city of approx. 320,000 population, is the capital city of Sarawak, a Malaysian state on the island of Borneo, and most importantly, my home. Since 10 years ago, I had been involved with a lot of research for a few local self-guided walking trails (eg. http://www.kuchinginandout.com/category/kino-talk/city-walk/) and also conducted several heritage walking tours in the Kuching's historical precinct. I will share about my journey of mapping Kuching historical precinct as a solo project, to crafting a sketching experience for 300 other fellow sketchers and other related industries.
