Since its inception in 1993, our Faculty has progressed to one of the most sought after Faculties in the country. Our alumni have performed exceptionally well at the postgraduate examinations obtaining high ranking positions. The Faculty of Medical Sciences was established in 1993 at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura as the sixth medical faculty in Sri Lanka. There are 17 academic departments and 3 paramedical units.
FMS is a recognised MBBS degree awarding institution under University Grants Commition (UGC) of Sri Lanka and a Approved Medical School in Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) and World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) - FAIMER SCHOOL ID: F0000175

“Every student admitted to the Medical Degree Programme of a university or an institution shall have passed the General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) Examination of Sri Lanka or an equivalent examination, in the subject of Biology, Chemistry and Physics with minimum grades of two credit passes and a simple pass in combination of these subjects at one and the same sitting” (As per the Gazette Extraordinary No. 2222/69 published on 10.04.2021)
The Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura is situated at Gangodawila, Nugegoda which is about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) southeast from the heart of Colombo.
Nugegoda is one of the most densely populated suburbs of Colombo. It is in the border of Sri Jayawardenapura Municipal Council Limits and Dehiwela Mt. Lavinia Municipal Council Limits, just outside Colombo City Limits. Central Nugegoda is a collection of densely packed shops and mixed residential areas.
The faculty spreads over an area of about 50 acres of beautifully landscaped, scenic and serene environment.
It's within 15 minutes of travelling time to the main teaching hospital, Colombo South Teaching Hospital, Kalubowila. Several other hospitals which are utilized for teaching namely, Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital, Base Hospital - Homagama and Cancer Institute Maharagama are also in close proximity.
All the basic amenities and facilities are available in and around the locality.

Colombo South Teaching Hospital (CSTH)
Colombo South Teaching Hospital (CSTH) is the second largest government hospital in Colombo district, located in Kalubowila. The hospital has a bed strength of 1093 with 2320 staff involved in patient care. It provides treatment to about 150 000 inward patients and 75 000 out patients per year.
It serves as the teaching hospital of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura while functioning under the Ministry of Health. The head of the institute is the director. In addition to the University professorial units, the hospital runs an out patients department (OPD) round the clock and admits inpatients to wards of all major disciplines and several medical specialties. In addition to the honorary consultants (specialists) from the faculty, there are about 49 other consultants (specialists) in Anaesthesia, Histopathology, Orthopaedics, Eye Surgery, Neurology, ENT Surgery, Chemical Pathology, Haematology, Judicial Medicine, Microbiology, Rheumatology, Dermatology, Gastroenterology, Radiology, Gynaecology & Obstetrics, Oral-maxillofacial (OMF) Surgery, Medicine, Cardiology, Paediatrics, Surgery, Genitor Urinary Surgery, Orthodontics, Psychiatry, Endocrinology, Transfusion Medicine, Vascular and Plastic Surgery Serving CSTH. The hospital is also equipped with intensive care units for Medical, Surgical and Neonatal patients and special unit to treat sexually transmitted diseases. There is also an acupuncture centre located within the hospital premises training and serving local and foreign individuals, even though it has no affiliation to the hospital.
Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital (SJGH)
The Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital (SJGH) is a government owned, not for profit tertiary care institute which was gifted by the people of Japan, honoring the late President His Excellency J.R. Jayawardana. Established under the provision of parliament Act number 54 of 1983 and has been managed by a board of members since its inception on the 17th of September 1984.
It is located in Sri Jayewardenepura, the capital of Sri Lanka, on nearly 30 acres of beautifully landscaped garden with serene nature. This state of the art green conceptual hospital maintains and preserves its environmental policies thoroughly for sustainable development. Eco-friendly hospital environment of SJGH has a nurturing, therapeutic effect and this helps to reduce patients' anxiety and stress, accelerate recovery, shorten hospitalizations, and promote a sense of well-being while uplifting the tranquility of the staff
This multi-specialty tertiary care Centre, offers a comprehensive full spectrum of care for the last 37 years, ranging from minor ailments to complex brain and heart surgeries at a substantially low cost. With over 1000 beds, our in-ward patient care facility is classified into three classes. Class 1 with en-suite room facility with all necessary amenities, class two consist of six bedded cubicles with one shared bathroom while the latter offers spacious non-congested separable beds with clean sanitary facilities. This allows the patient to conveniently choose their stay affordably as billing is itemized unlike in the for profit hospitals.
Base Hospital Homagama (BHH)
Homagama base hospital is situated around 18 kilometres away from the Colombo in the western province in Sri Lanka. It is only about 500m away from the high-level road which links the capital city Colombo with Uva and Sabaragamuwa provinces. It is only about 2 kilometres away from the Kottawa exit of the southern highway.
Base hospital Homagama was donated in 1946 by Mr Semaneris Appuhamy , a well-known philanthropist of the area. Subsequently, on the 26th January 1997, the Homagama Hospital was upgraded to a Base Hospital by the government to meet the healthcare needs of a rapidly urbanizing area of the Western Province.
Hospital is under the western provincial health ministry. The bed strength of the hospital is about 400. And the hospital caters to a population of 400’000. Hospital is staffed with all the major specialities (Medicine, Surgery, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, and Paediatrics) and minor specialities like ophthalmology, dermatology, ENT, radiology, pathology and psychiatry other than its OPD, PCU, Blood bank, ICU, Endoscopy, Blood bank and Endoscopy services.
The Homagama Base Hospital and its Primary Care Unit house the students of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura as a teaching hospital.
National Cancer Institute Sri Lanka (NCI)
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) also known as the Apeksha Hospital - Maharagama is the leading hospital under the Ministry of Health dedicated to the diagnosis and follow-up treatment of cancer patients. The NCI offers both the diagnostic facilities necessary for the identification of all types of cancer, and specialised care in surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. A team of expert Consultants manage the hospital services alongside medical doctors, nurses, pharmacists, medical physicists, laboratory technicians and minor workers. Anyone can access the services, free of charge. In addition to delivering quality care services, the NCI is the major training centre for medical undergraduates and postgraduates of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM).
The integrated MBBS curriculum with a preclinical phase, a para clinical phase and a clinical phase combines sound theoretical knowledge with practical skills in laboratory settings and applications in real life situations through teaching learning activities in many diverse setting. Clinical teaching takes place in 2 teaching hospitals; Colombo South teaching hospital and Sri Jayewardenepura General hospital and many other local health care facilities and preventive health care is learned at the Boralesgamuwa Medical officer of Health area.
The present curriculum is an integrated system based curriculum spanning over three phases. Phase I consists of five terms. (The duration of each term is ten weeks). Ten modules are included in Phase one. The Personal and Professional Development (PPD) stream begins in Phase 1 and continue throughout phase II and Phase III.
Phase II consists of six terms (Term 6 - 11). Sixteen modules, Community Health Stream (CHS) and the PPD stream are included in Phase II. Each module/stream committee is chaired by a chairperson and assisted by a convener with an average of 5-8 committee members representing the relevant departments. The committee members are selected on the basis of the main subjects which are to be included in the module to facilitate smooth implementation.
One of the Institutional objectives of the Faculty of Medical Sciences University of Sri Jayewardenepura is to train a graduate to work in a primary care setting. Many inputs are made into the curriculum to achieve this. This year the Community Based Medical Learning programme (CBML) focused on supervised exposures to state primary care facilities with self directed learning and reflective writing.
Professorial unit appointments span over the final year in Phase III conducted at the university professorial units in the Colombo South Teaching Hospital at Kalubowila rotating through 8-week attachments in Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Paediatrics and 4 weeks each in Family Medicine and Psychiatry.
A variety of extra-curricular activities are available within the University providing students with ample respite from academic work. The undergraduates take part in a wide range of sports and aesthetic activities and have represented the University and excelled at both national and international events.

We have pioneered research in diverse fields ranging from basic medical sciences, clinical medicine, behavioral sciences and intervention research through interdisciplinary collaborations at national, regional and international level.
The faculties' institutional objective is to keep abreast of advancing medical knowledge, contribute to new knowledge through research. In order to achieve this academics, students and researchers based in different departments across the faculty are looking at major challenges that face our society, ranging from vector borne diseases, non-communicable diseases, risk factor and behavior modification, cancer and palliative care to social and cultural issues locally relevant and internationally important.
Many academics have taken interdisciplinary initiatives, and make significant contributions to society - regionally, nationally and internationally - through their dedicated and sustained efforts.
Candidates with results at a foreign examination held outside Sri Lanka, deemed equivalent to G.C.E. (Advanced Level) Examination of Sri Lanka with a minimum of two Cs and an S in the subject of Biology, Chemistry and Physics are eligible to apply for admission to Universities in Sri Lanka.
Applicants are advised to attach to their applications the original letter obtained from the Examinations Board concerned, to prove that their educational qualifications are equivalent to the G.C.E. (Advanced Level) Examination of Sri Lanka or their educational qualifications are considered for admission to a university in their own country to follow an undergraduate course of study leading to a Bachelor’s Degree.
Applicants should ensure that all required passes are obtained in one and the same sitting
under a recognized Board of Examinations subject to the rules set out by the Education Authority of the country concerned.
Applicants should attach to their applications the certified copies of the educational certificate and the statement of results of their qualifying examination. (The copy of the educational certificate and the statement of results should be certified by the relevant Examinations Board which conducted the examination concerned ; For Example, if a candidate has Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Level qualification, then the copies of certificate and statement of result should be certified by the Pearson but not by the other institutions such as school and embassy).
The eligible candidates for admission under this special provision are;

Candidates with Sri Lankan passports
In order to become eligible;
Sri Lankan candidates should have studied abroad for a period of not less than three academic
years immediately prior to sitting the qualifying examination. (N.B.: Applicants must provide
the following documents and Refer Section 10.2 for more information)
Certified copies of the candidate’s Passports (with Visa) covering the period studied abroad
Documentary evidence issued by a relevant authority of the foreign country confirming the
candidate’s resided / residing period there.
Originals of the Foreign & Sri Lankan (if any) School Leaving Certificates of the candidate
Certified copy of the candidate’s birth certificate
Father/Mother/Guardian (only if parents expired) of the Sri Lankan candidates should also
have worked in the same country in which the candidate has studied, during his/her period
studied abroad. (N.B.: Applicants must provide the following documents and Refer Section
10.2 for more information)
Originals of the Service Certificate/s of the Father/Mother/Guardian
Documentary evidence issued by a relevant authority of the foreign country confirming the
parents’/ guardian’s resided / residing period there.
Certified copies of parents’/guardians’ Passports (with Visa) covering the period worked
abroad
Documentary evidences to prove that the Guardian has been legally appointed
Children of Sri Lankan diplomatic personnel attached to Sri Lankan diplomatic missions abroad
or on foreign assignments sponsored by the Government of Sri Lanka, should have studied abroad at least for a period of three academic years in the six year period immediately prior to sitting the qualifying examination, along with their parents who are Sri Lankan diplomats.
Sri Lankan diplomatic personnel are referred to as the Sri Lankan Foreign Service officers, officers from certain other Services and Ministries/Agencies such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Defence, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Public Administration, Department of Labour and the Sri Lankan Bureau of Foreign Employment who have been appointed to serve in Sri Lankan Missions abroad for limited periods, the officers from other Services and Ministries / Departments attached to Missions abroad whose overseas assignments are not routine and serve only limited periods abroad, the appointments to Missions abroad made on the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers as approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Note: However, the children of Sri Lankan diplomatic personnel who have satisfied the requirements for admission at a foreign examination equivalent to G.C.E (Advanced Level)
Examination of Sri Lanka held locally too will be considered, if;
They have sat the said examination locally within a period of 06 months from the date of their returning to Sri Lanka after completion of a continuous period of not less than 2 1/2 years of studies abroad immediately prior to sitting the qualifying examination.
provided that;
Their parents have returned to Sri Lanka on completion of the assignment having served at least for a period of 03 years immediately prior to their child sitting the said examination locally. (N.B:Applicants must provide documentary proof.)
Candidates with foreign passports must also provide the originals of their School Leaving Certificates.
Documents in proof of the requirements above.
Duly certified copy of the certificate in proof of Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), if the considered educational qualification of a candidate is a High School Diploma.
Duly certified copy of the certificate of Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS), if a candidate studied in a language other than English.
Documentary evidences in proof of funds in relevant foreign currencies [Candidate must submit original letters issued by the banks stating the bank balances of the Father/ Mother/ Guardian in relevant foreign currencies (currency of the relevant country they have/are worked/working) as documentary evidences in proof of the availability of sufficient funds]. [Not relevant for children of Sri Lankan diplomats (Category a)].
Legally valid affidavit, if there is a difference in the names of the candidate mentioned in the educational certificate, statement of results, school leaving certificates, birth certificate, passport and any other submitting documents.
