The USFL's Brian Woods recently attended a zoom meeting from InsideTheLeague.com alongside 30-40 other participants in the call. Brian woods dropped some major info on USFL player recruitment, with ITL's Neil Stratton paraphrasing it as the following:
“The USFL will grow to become a contender for players who enter the transfer portal and others who are at least three years removed from high school graduation. The USFL will not be the place for six- and seven-year veterans looking to cash a few last checks before cycling out of pro football."
Stratton went on to say,
“I went into the session believing the USFL would just be The Spring League 2.0, a bigger and better version of Brian’s previous project. What I learned was that he has much bigger plans for the league, and while it won’t compete with the NFL, obviously, it will compete with college teams, especially G5 teams.“
With this, we now know that the USFL is going after young stars that maybe don't want to finish college. This is a fantastic strategy in my opinion, because the younger the players are, the longer they will stay in the league, the longer the league stays in business, the more money it makes, and the more money it makes, the more they can pay the players, and the more they can pay the players, the more players will actually want to play in the USFL. A downside to going after specifically young college ball players is that you could potentially be overlooking some fantastic older/ex-NFL talent. Some great examples of this would be QB Josh Johnson, WR Antonio Gandy-Golden, QB Bryan Scott or QB Luis Perez, even though it is very likely we will get to see him play in 2022, mainly because of his alt football history (Birmingham Iron, AAF, 2019, New York Guardians, XFL, 2020, Jousters, TSL, 2021.).
Are there any players that you deem eligible to play in the USFL that you'd want to see play? Let us know in our Discord Server!
