Dec. 30, 2021
Many important things have happened this year with spring football. A spring football league finally played through a full season (The Spring League), the XFL was in talks with the CFL about a possible merger, we found out that the XFL will be returning but in 2023, but most importantly (in my opinion, at least): The United States Football League announced it's return from the dead on June 3rd, and we got team names & cities on November 22.
Personally, I am excited for the XFL, but I am more hyped for the USFL because they play sooner. And the sooner the football begins, the more excited I become for it. Eight new teams using their old names from the 1980's-era USFL and staying in their original cities.
There us still cause for hype about the XFL though, with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson recently announcing on CNBC that the league will be announcing "new teams, new cities" and new broadcast partners in 1-2 months. While there are still questions on which XFL 2020 teams are staying and which are leaving, I feel like the St. Louis BattleHawks, a team in Seattle and a team in Washington D.C. are almost locks. We aren't sure if the teams in Seattle and D.C. are rebranding, but we are almost positive that the BattleHawks are keeping their name, location, and branding.
All of the 2022 USFL season will be played in Birmingham, AL, with games played at the new Protective Stadium and other games played at the older Legion Field, home of the AAF's Birmingham Iron in 2019. Games will be on FOX Sports One, FOX, NBC, Peacock and USA. The USFL's showcase event/combine will be on January 8-9 for skill position players and January 22-23 for specialists, with the draft slated to be in mid-February with no date set yet.
