This Karolinska Institute study tested how an all-nighter affects thinking abilities at different times of day using 2-minute cognitive tests through an app. Results showed that sleep deprivation impaired most cognitive functions, especially attention, but the effects varied throughout the day.
This study used fMRI to examine brain development in premature and full-term babies. The researchers tracked how brain regions physically develop and communicate with each other over time, finding that both structural and functional changes occur linearly at the start and then functional connectivity takes over, allowing for greater specialization.
This Harvard study created a breakthrough three-dimensional human brain cell model that successfully replicated two key features of Alzheimer's disease for the first time. Using specially modified human neural stem cells grown in a gel-like environment, they generated both amyloid-beta plaques and tau tangles– the hallmark signs of Alzheimer’s. The study showed that blocking amyloid-beta production reduced both plaques and tangles, providing important validation for a leading theory about Alzheimer's development.
