Currently from North Port, Fl, John Seepe is the President of the US 2.4mR Class. Additionally, he is the Secretary of the International 2.4mR Class. He has been dedicated to the sailing of the 2.4mR after starting in the Hansa 303 boats following his accident in which he lost his left leg in November of 2018. He received his first boat from the Clagett Sailing group in December of 2019 and has been progressing up through the regatta results ever sense
John started racing in Thunderbirds in Puget Sound. He ran a US Navy Sailing Team for 3 years while assigned to the USS Nimitz. From there he progressed into a Peterson 34 which he campaigned and sailed to California where he worked in the aerospace industry. He raced in multiple Newport Ensenada races and crewed on Blade II (Farr 40). After his accident on his way to work at Virgin Orbit his thoughts of sailing ever again were crushed. He lived on his Whitby 42 in Redondo Beach planning on sailing across the Pacific. The Stars & Stripes team came by his work and took him foiling for 4 hours on their M32 which showed him that he could sail again. Mike Buckley and Taylor Canfield showed him he could do it (See video https://fb.watch/jMlWlK2ExY/) Yes, Taylor let him take the helm and he was hooked again!
John entered his first race after his accident at the Coronado Yacht Club taking 2nd Place one month after his outing with team Stars & Stripes. He followed this up with a 1st Place finish in San Francisco 4 months later. These first 2 regattas were sailed in Hansa 303 boats but he yearned for something more technical and settled on the 2.4mR boat. He applied for a grant boat in October of 2019 and was the first US Sailor to be awarded a Clagett 2.4mR to use for 4 years. He now owns 4 boats of his own 2.4mR’s and is dedicated to getting others into this technical boat.
John has sailed in the last 2 World Championships and will be attending the 2023 2.4mR World Championships in Finland. He has been coached by Dave Dellenbaugh and Dave Parry both in 2.4mR and in Match Racing at Oakcliff.
