Thanks for joining the Bristol Econometrics Research Students Reading Group.
The motivation for this reading group is twofold.
First, learning mathematics and statistics becomes far more engaging and effective when we share ideas and discuss them together. And we can get familiar with each other.
Second, collaborative reading can significantly speed up the learning process. For example, reading a 400-page textbook alone may take half a year, whereas reading together and exchanging insights can make the process much more efficient.By sharing notes or giving presentations, we can grasp the overall structure of a book chapter or a research paper within one hour.
The plan for this reading group is for each week, at least one student will choose either: 1. book chapters, or 2. research papers that they are interested in.
The organiser may either:
1. upload their reading notes via external links (e.g. GitHub, Notion), which will be collected in this shared Excel file; or
2. organise a Zoom or in-person meeting to give a presentation of around one hour.
Considering that MRes Year 1 students have heavy coursework and final-year PhD students are often very busy, participation in this reading group is entirely voluntary and there is no expectation of regular attendance.
Faculty members are, of course, very welcome to join.
This is an internal and informal reading group, so please do not worry about making mistakes or falling behind. If you notice any errors in the notes or presentations, feel free to point them out (through comments in this shared Excel file or via private email). After all, learning is an iterative process: progress often comes from making mistakes, receiving feedback, and improving—just as AI systems learn through repeated errors and corrections.
We hope this reading group can be helpful for everyone interested in econometrics.
