Mechanics: Force Table

Purpose:
To demonstrate forces resolved into components.

Description: 

3-4 strings are tied to a washer or key ring. Each string runs over a pulley to some hanging weight. If the vector sum of the forces is zero, the key ring will remain stationary in the center of the table.

Setup 2-3 strings with specified weights and angles then calculate the weight and angle needed for the final string to put the key ring in equilibrium.

Force table, string, hanging weights

The force table is stored in the lab rooms, talk to Matt Abbott to borrow a table for the demonstration. String is in a drawer across from PHYS-102 and weights are on shelf 153.
