PIRA Class: 1G20.60
Purpose:
To demonstrate the change in force exerted on an object throughout an elevator ride.
Description:
2-3 students ride the elevator while one student stands on a Newton scale. The other students note the force values during different parts of the ride. Force reading should vary by 20 to 40 Newtons between constant velocity and acceleration.
An analogous demonstration can be performed in front of the class using a weight hung by a 20 N spring scale which the instructor accelerates upward and downward.
Equipment:
Newton scale, (Optional) hanging mass and spring scale
Location:
Shelves 125, Optional: 151 and 123
