Mechanics: Density Rods

Purpose:
To explore the relationship between mass, density, and volume.

Description:
Students make relative tactile mass observations of different material rods.

1. Rods of identical shape, size, & color are passed around the class.

2. Students will note the greatest difference in mass between the wood & lead rods.

3. Float the "Floating Rock" in a bucket of water.

PEDAGOGY: Use the crystal models in discussions of different materials' compactness

Density rods, floating rock and tub, crystal sets
