PIRA Class: 5H30.10
Purpose:
To demonstrate the force on charges (and subsequent change in motion) moving perpendicular to a magnetic field.
Description:
Use a magnet to deflect an electron beam.
- Power supply to Maltese cross tube is in the base of the stand.
- Fluorescent screen glows as electrons collide with screen particles.
- Maltese cross blocks part of the electron beam, hence the shadow on the tube's end screen.
- To observe the effect of the external magnetic field on the moving electrons, vary the placement of the magnet and the direction of the magnetic field.
Equipment:
Crooke's Tube (CRT), Strong & Weak Magnets
