Electricity & Magnetism: Wire Coil in Liquid Nitrogen and in Boiling Water

Purpose:  

To demonstrate current dependence on temperature. 

Description: 

A circuit's wire coil is dropped into liquid nitrogen and a subsequent drop in the circuit resistance is observed. An increased in the circuit's resistance is observed when the same coil is placed in boiling water.

Equipment: 

Wire coil, Light Bulb 

Support Equipment: 

Power Supply, Overhead projector, liquid Nitrogen, Kettle, coil
