"Nobody out there ever gets to define the life I'm meant to lead with this unruly heart of mine." This powerful message from the 2018 musical "The Prom" resonates strongly with young singers. Opening with a pop-style solo that blossoms into tender choral harmonies, this warm ballad is both inspirational and relevant.

My mother was my first piano teacher. I was an unruly, hyperactive child and in my first lesson she forbade me to play while standing on the piano chair. It could only improve from there. As a teenager and young adult, I was fortunate to have wonderful mentors in South Africa, Germany, Switzerland and France: Mario Nell, Heinrich van der Mescht, Joseph Stanford, Phillip Moll, Philippe Entremont and Alfred Brendel.

As a music teacher, you will undoubtedly have students who view a more creative and arts-type classroom as a location to misbehave. Students look at a music classroom as an unstructured and relaxed setting, making it easy for them to become unruly and unattentive. It can become incredibly difficult as a teacher to keep your cool and refrain from lashing out or raising your voice when the classroom gets out of hand in this way.

A similar complexity exists in my life as a same-sex attracted (SSA) woman and probably for others who wrestle with their sexuality as well. I was recently given an opportunity to share honestly about same-sex attraction through my writing. As I wrestled with that possibility, I realized there were so many other aspects involved in opening up about that part of my life. Owning my story impacts past relationships, current friendships, connections with family, my job, and my view of God. Through all of this processing, a repetitive Christian song and foggy memories of piano lessons have pushed me to see a bigger narrative taking place.

I started taking piano and flute lessons when I was nine years old. My mother screened about a dozen suitors and found a piano teacher who shared her passions for Schubert and Liszt, and a flute teacher who idolized Jean-Pierre Rampal and Yusef Lateef.

He started flipping through the jazz section, pulled out the record you see pictured above and gently lowered the needle onto the disc. In about thirty seconds I sat bolt upright and demanded to know who on earth was playing that piano.

I listened to the whole album twice that day and spent the rest of the week replaying passages in my head. By the time my weekly piano lesson rolled around, I was ready to challenge the musical establishment.

Fine and Performing Arts presents Mabel Kwan on piano

Southeastern's Department of Fine and Performing Arts presents Mabel Kwan on piano as a part of the Guest Artist Series.

Kwan will perform Wednesday, April 1, at 7:30 p.m in Pottle Auditorium. Kwan and composer Ray Evanoff will also present a master class in Pottle Auditorium at 3 p.m. the day of the concert.

Kwan has performed throughout the world, both as a soloist and a member of Ensemble Dal Niente, as part of the International Summer Courses for New Music at Darmstadt, UNRULY Music Festival, MusicArte Panama, SALT Festival, MATA Interval Series, PianoForte Chicago's Experimental Piano Series, Sonic Fusion Festival and others.

"Mabel Kwan brings a unique thoughtfulness to the piano that makes her visit to Southeastern an exciting, significant offering to the area's artistic community," said Fine and Performing Arts Interim Department Head Kenneth Boulton.

Kwan will present a program of compositions, including world premieres by Kari Besharse and Philip Schuessler, both faculty members of the music program at Southeastern.

The performance is in conjunction with FOCI Arts and Lyceum Arts and Lectures. FOCI (facilitating original creativity inclusively) is a New Orleans-based organization devoted to the contemporary arts.

For more information, contact the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at 549-2184.

Payin me back for all my trouble, my unruly ways

For the sleepless nights I gave my mother, the narrowest escapes

Does anybody ever really get away?

You pay on time, but you gotta pay

The unruly crowd shouts curses at her, but she's oblivious of their threats and launches into her song, "Me and My Town," while the suffering citizens continue to boo her. An ensemble of boys backs her up through the number, pandering to her every wish.

An experienced piano player, Siegel has an extensive performance resume. He has performed Keyboard Conversations throughout the United States, and has presented the concert in some cities for more than 40 years. This year, Siegel focuses on renditions of classical music; however, the W&J community should not expect the typical classical concert. ff782bc1db
