Errors related to unrar.dll can arise for a few different different reasons. For instance, a faulty application, unrar.dll has been deleted or misplaced, corrupted by malicious software present on your PC or a damaged Windows registry.

In the vast majority of cases, the solution is to properly reinstall unrar.dll on your PC, to the Windows system folder. Alternatively, some programs, notably PC games, require that the DLL file is placed in the game/application installation folder.

Hey guys,

i've noticed that Dragon Age ships with unrar.dll

which might be affected by the recent WinRar Vulnerabilites.

"The libraries unrar.dll and unrar64.dll, used by third-party applications, are also vulnerable. While some applications have released updates to resolve the issue, others are still using older versions of the library files, which remain vulnerable."

Can you check in your \bin_ship folder, maybe its a file from a mod, i'm not sure.

Cheers

I then unpacked the defs file and noticed that the unrar.dll file is different in size: 271kb instead of the usual 180kb. I also tried swapping the unrar.dll and tried working on the 3-24 defs updates, but failed. Checking the Logs.IntelligentUpdater.txt file shows that there's a problem with this very file.

Continued from the original post. I checked the Log.IntelligentUpdater.txt file and noticed that it is indeed the unrar.dll component that has become problematic. (Again, the fire size is 271kb instead of the usual 180kb packed on previous def update files)

There's a definitions file for all legacy software versions dated 3-29-2022, so I downloaded it and tried to install -- but again, to NO avail. Apparently this file also suffers from the SAME unrar.dll issue, as in the case of 20220324-010-v5i32.exe.

Just note that most Win XP SP3 and Vista SP2 users currently use the recommended legacy version of Norton v22.15.5.40 (released Sept 2020) that is described in the product update announcement Norton 22.15 for Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 SP0 is Now Available! and may not be affected by this problem with unrar.dll and the Intelligent Updater. I can't say for certain because I don't own a Win XP SP3 machine and I no longer have a legacy Norton v22.15.x product installed on my Vista SP2 machine.

You could be correct that the unrar.dll version bundled with 202205xx-00x-core3v5i32.exe since 23-Mar-2022 is not compatible with Win XP SP3 (your installation log only notes the unrar.dll file is not signed by Symantec), but there might be other issues that are specific to NIS v21.7.0.11 and/or missing/outdated security certificates on your specific Win XP SP3 machine that are at least contributing the problem. Do you know of any other Win XP SP3 or Vista SP2 users who have reported that they are unable to run the Intelligent Updater?

Hopefully you're correctly and there's just a problem with the latest unrar.dll v6.11 file bundled inside the 202205xx-00x-core3v5i32.exe Intelligent Updater for Norton v22.6 and earlier products. If this latest unrar.dll version is incompatible with Win XP SP3 and all Win XP3 SP3 users are now unable to use the Intelligent Updater as you've suggested then Norton will have to switch back to using an older unrar.dll file. I can speculate all I want but at the end of the day someone from Norton will have to step in and explain what's actually going on.

Update: Its confirmed the unrar.dll issue IS being pro-actively addressed by Norton. Personally, I believe and have posted a link with the reference, regarding older unrar.dll having remote code issues, as well as a proof of concept for it in my earlier post. Norton is assuredly aware of that as well. Lets sit tight a bit longer for something official.

Per my post , this unrar.dll problem is also affecting Broadcom / Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) customer who have Win XP clients on their network. The Broadcom knowledge base article ID 241845 Error: "unrar.dll is Not Symantec Signed. IU Cannot Continue Processing" When Installing Intelligent Updater After 3/24/2022 (last updated 16-May-2022) suggests that the problem might be related to missing root certificates that are required to authenticate the decompression module (unrar.dll) included in the Intelligent Updater file. Instructions are provided in that article for installing the "DigiCert Assured ID Root CA" certificate.

I also suggested that anon743 might be unable to update from the unsupported NIS v21.7.0.11 to NIS v22.15.5.40 (i.e., the official legacy version of Norton for Win XP and Vista - see Gayathri_R's 24-Sep-2020 product announcement at Norton 22.15 for Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 SP0 is Now Available!) because of a missing root certificate that would normally be found on a Win XP SP3 computer, but that's just speculation on my part. I know of many Win Vista SP2 users who performed a clean reinstall of their operating system after March 2020 (i.e., before Microsoft deactivated the Windows Update servers for Win XP and Vista in August 2020) and saw an error 800B0109 ("A certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate which is not trusted by the trust provider") when Windows Update attempted to install a cumulative security update for their .NET Framework that was released on 11-Apr-2017 before Vista reached end of extended support. These Vista SP2 users had to manually apply the missing root certificates in the MicrosoftRootCertificateAuthority2011.cer file before they could update their .NET Framework - see greenhillmaniac's June 2020 solution in Certificate Trust Provider Error Installing Updates in the Vista board of the MFSN forum.

I realize that won't solve the unrar.dll failure when the Intelligent Updater tries to apply the full virus definition set on your Win XP SP3 machine, but if Norton v22.15.5.40 runs correctly then the automatic LiveUpdate task should be able to keep your virus definitions up-to-date.

I don't know if this is only an issue with the latest unrar.dll I'm using or actually a very small (just one "W") but annoying mistake in UnRAR.au3 but I wanted to share my debugging results just in case others also have this problem. ff782bc1db
