Choose physical and/or digital space
Digital: get inspired by NDLAs tidsmaskinrom. Google Forms can also be used. Create a "test" where they must enter the correct password to proceed.
Physical: buy digit padlocks and chains for boxes and /or coding lock boxes.
Create an overview of available activities and equipment at school. Feel free to collaborate with teachers of other subjects, as variety in equipment is motivating and can be incorporated even if you do not typically use it in your subject.
Choose some activities (see teaching tips below) that can lead to a code-number of activities = number of groups inside at the same time before (or one group can be in alone)
Students can collect letters from word-solution in the boxes and/or pieces of puzzles, etc.
Have activities and boxes ready in the room
When students arrive at a complete solution word or solve the puzzle, the task is finished
An escape room doesn't have to be as complicated as it sounds! Use activities that you do in class anyway; the task options are countless, for example:
Star puzzle – write a code on the back side before cutting
Crossword (create a crossword easily with the help of an online program) – create a code by marking some squares in the crossword out; students need to understand that a letter is a number after the letter number in the alphabet.
Place pictures in the historical order – each picture has a number. If you have more pictures than the four-digit code, they are to arrive at, you can simply mark on a piece of paper which sheets are in the correct order to choose.
The same can be done with text. Divide a short story and with audio – record audio clips in, for example, Spotify for podcasters or Audacity. Each clip begins with a number; put them in a different order. Students can listen on a PC or access it with a QR code.
Sentence analysis – cut out a sentence into parts and analyse markers, write numbers on the back side.
Various calculations, experiments or similar must be done to arrive at a code.
Travel virtually with VR or by watching a video (use a PC or QR code) . Ask students some questions that they find answers to, where they travel or in the video, and that constitute a code.
