PhD Students Wanted

Prospective PhD Students!

Our lab is recruiting talented PhD students who will advance the field of computational biology. Below are some qualifications important for this role.

  • Programming skills: Our lab is purely computational. We routinely develop software in Python, Java and Javascript, and provide them in open-source repositories and webservers. Your past programming experience and productivity are big pluses.

  • Scientific curiosity: If you are interested in pursuing a PhD, then you must already see yourself as a scientist, and probably got involved in some research activity. Prepare to discuss your past research interests, activities and products (if any).

  • Teamwork skills: While a PhD thesis cannot be written collaboratively, we take part in various collaborative projects. Your communication skills, past teamwork experience and exposure to collaboration tools and software are all pluses.

If you think you may be a good match, please get yourself familiar with our research and publications, and write an email to ozgun.babur (-at-) umb.edu telling about your interests and why you think our lab is a good place for you. Attach your resume, transcripts and GRE scores. Please don't send any mass-mailed messages. Those are promptly ignored. (And yes, even if someone plugs in our lab name and our paper titles in their mass-email, those are still mass-email, thus ignored. )

UMass Boston College of Science and Mathematics provide 3 different doctoral programs relevant to our research activities as listed below.

Computer Science Program (CS): This is suitable for candidates with a Computer Science or a similar background. While interdisciplinary studies are OK, the program is designed around Computer Science concepts.

Computational Sciences Program (CSci): This is an interdisciplinary program with an emphasis on Mathematics. Students have 2 advisors from different disciplines.

Integrative Biosciences Program (IB): This is another interdisciplinary program where the primary focus is biology. Students have 2 advisors from different disciplines.

Both the CSci and IB programs have a Bioinformatics track.
