Scope, Impact, and Campus Responses

November 21, 2:00pm-3:30pm - Maize and Blue Auditorium, Student Activities Building

  • Sara Abelson, Co-Investigator and Lead for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Projects, The Healthy Minds Network & PhD Candidate, University of Michigan School of Public Health
  • Christine Asidao, Ph.D., Associate Director of Community Engagement and Outreach, University of Michigan Counseling and Psychological Services

Student mental health is a large and growing concern in higher education. Sara Abelson will present findings from the largest national study of college student mental health, which is conducted by the Healthy Minds Network, based at the University of Michigan. The data reveal the scope of the issue, trends over time, who is affected, and the impact of untreated mental health concerns. From her work with colleges and universities across the country, Sara will also share campus approaches to addressing student mental health and discuss how Healthy Minds is supporting research translation into practice. Dr. Christine Asidao will discuss how Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at the University of Michigan is working to foster a campus environment supportive of student mental health through a new faculty toolkit developed with qualitative data gathered from student and faculty focus groups and research focused on positive psychology.
