Clinical Rotation: Emergency Point-of-Care Ultrasound Resident Elective

Year: Emergency Medicine PGY-2 or PGY-3

Length: 4 Weeks

Goals of Rotation: 

1. Improve proficiency in technical skills and image interpretation

2. Expand knowledge of basic ultrasound

3. Learn advanced and emerging point-of-care ultrasound applications

4. Improve integration of ultrasound into the evaluation and care of critical patients

Educational Objectives:

1. To improve proficiency in the performance and interpretation of point-of-care ultrasound examinations

2. To improve diagnostic point-of-care ultrasound examinations in the following areas:

   1. Deep Venous Thrombosis

   2. Musculoskeletal

   3. Ocular

   4. Female Pelvic

   5. Thoracic

   6. Bowel

3. To have the opportunity to become more competent in performing ultrasound-guided procedures in the following areas:

   1. Arthrocentesis

   2. Foreign body removal

   3. Lumbar puncture

   4. Paracentesis

   5. Pericardiocentesis

   6. Nerve blocks

   7. Thoracentesis

   8. Vascular access

4. Perform and interpret the required scans for the rotation

5. To become familiar with scientific evidence related to emergency ultrasound

6. To become more proficient with communication of results, documentation, and billing

7. To provide mentoring to residents on ultrasound-related research projects or didactic lectures

Resident Responsibilities:

1. Complete 6 hours of image review during Q&A

2. Perform at least 200 point-of-care ultrasound examinations that are technically adequate and correctly interpreted

3. Complete the assigned pre-reading online modules

4. Complete the in-person ultrasound examinations

5. Prepare 10 questions for ultrasound question bank that demonstrate understanding of course material

6. Either publish an ultrasound case report or present an ultrasound lecture during didactics

7. Assist with the education of the medical students, interns, and off-service rotators on the elective

Assessment Method of Performance

At the end of the rotation, there will be computerized testing of the learner's knowledge base.  Emergency ultrasound section faculty will also complete a written evaluation of the resident.
