Ark: Survival Evolved, the current king of dinosaur hill, is not a simulation of any kind. Saurian meanwhile, new on Steam Early Access this week after a successful Kickstarting a while back, is a survival game that similarly appeals to our first childhood love, but wants to be more Walking With Dinosaurs than Jurassic World. Which is to say, a dinosaur life simulation based on contemporary science's best guess as the thunder lizards' lifestyle. The release version so far is fairly short on things to do, but has some meticulously-recreated dinos, the option to pick a doomed fight with a Triceratops, and the significant risk of getting eaten by your own mother.

Then there is the brutality of the early raptor lifecycle. At your youngest, older raptors will simply ignore you, leaving you to fend for yourself, but once you reach adolescence you're deemed a rival for food sources and will be attacked if you get too close to a grown-up. I say 'attacked', but right now the impression is that the other dinosaur simply walks over you, resulting in instant death. Gets the point across, I suppose, but we're not exactly red in tooth and claw yet.

I don't know. I worry about Saurian. I worry that it'll die on the vine if it doesn't get a little bit silly, but that goes against the simulatory approach it wants to take - and that I'd like to see it run with until it does find the fun. Evolve or die, I suppose. Right now, it makes for a briefly and not unattractive diverting proof of concept, but that key question - what do we actually want from a dinosaur simulator? - remains unanswered.

Players use dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures, surviving, collecting, and interacting with the world around them. Creatures, referred to as Playables in-game, have different classes, diets, and types and need to be grown to better survive. Players have the option to customize their playables be customized with cosmetics like colors, patterns, and skins, which differ based on specific playables. The main currency used is DNA, which allows the player to purchase cosmetics and numerous other items. DNA is earned by completing missions as a playable and selling items to Jerry The Merchant, who moves to different locations around the world. Special items, called Collectibles, sell for high prices at Jerry's Store and allow players to earn large amounts of DNA quickly.

Currently, Jurassic Park: Dinosaur Simulator, allows the player to play as a dinosaur from the Jurassic franchise in a Sandbox, open-world setting with an almost entirely destructible environment. Currently, the playable dinosaurs are: Velociraptor, Dilophosaurus, Stegosaurus, Troodon, Spinosaurus, Pyroraptor and Arcocanthosaurus, the latter three of which were introduced in the third update, along with AI-controlled flying reptiles that could be hunted or fought. Pteranodon, Triceratops and Plesiosaurus are the next playable creatures under development. There are several modes of play.

On occasion, groups of humans can be found travelling in groups across your territories. They may attempt to steal eggs or subdue you and other pack/herd members via tranquilliser darts, or, with smaller dinosaurs, nets.

Welcome to Dinosaur Simulator. Live as one of the most amazing animals to walk the earth. Play as a dinosaur as you attempt to avoid disasters, predators, and starvation. You first start as a dinosaur in the wild. If you want to change your dinosaur, simply go to the shop but you need DNA to buy dinosaurs. Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus rex is defaulted to you. Play the game and collect DNA to buy more cool dinosaurs! If your dinosaur is an herbivore, you have to eat the leaves off of trees or eat the ferns on the ground and be careful of players that want to kill you for fun or kill you to eat. If your dinosaur is a carnivore, kill other players to eat their dinosaur or just find a dead dinosaur laying on the ground and simply eat it.

The ultimate goal is to survive as prehistoric dinosaurs and other unique creatures against predators, and natural threats of starvation, dehydration, and weather. Gaining more in-game currency to unlock new dinosaurs and unique skins are the main progression in the game to get better in the game. The game has gone through many major updates reaching newer amounts of playable characters, currency, trading, and advanced mechanics. As of now, there are over 100 dinosaurs and skins to play with. Every creature has different stats, diets, sounds, play styles, and strategies to fit your taste. The main currency in Dinosaur Simulator is DNA, which is earned by surviving days and growing to become juvenile, adult.

Every creature has its own stats. There are 4 different stats; health, attack, defense, and speed. Most carnivores have high attack stats, and herbivores have good health and defense stats. For an example as an Elder, the maximum growth, the Tyrannosaurus Rex deals 147 damage, and the Triceratops, as an Elder, has 15 defense. The attack stat shows how much damage you do to a creature when you attack it. The defense stat shows how good your resistance to an attack is. The health stat shows how much your maximum health is, and the speed stat depicts how fast your dinosaur can run, and walk. As your dinosaur gets older, the speed decreases as you grow. Skins for Dinosaurs can be obtained through gameplay, purchasing them, or going through Trading Map where you can trade Dinosaurs and Skins. There are also "hybrids" such as the Albino Terror, Megavore, Avinychus, and Scylla. These creatures are a hybrid, and are a breed of many different types of dinosaurs.

Plenty of games let you play in a prehistoric world or in the modern world, fighting against total destruction at the claws of giant dinos. However, few of these games let you play as the dinosaurs that are actually disrupting mankind. Occasionally, though, some break through and offer players a chance to inflict maximum damage as only a T. Rex can.

There are a variety of genres covered in the dino world, giving everyone a chance to fulfill their childhood dream of being a Brontosaurus. Some games are even kid-friendly, so you can potentially encourage the dinosaur phase in the kid in your life.

Updated November 5, 2023, by Rebecca Timberlake: There is always room for more dinosaur-inspired games in the world, and any that let you take on the role of the prehistoric predators are sure to offer hours of fun. That said, sometimes the theme and gameplay can get a bit monotonous, so variety in style, play, and difficulty are a must.

Ark: Survival Evolved is a game where you're tasked with surviving on an island inhabited by dinosaurs, and while you're doing your best to stay alive you can tame some of your island mates. While the game itself doesn't offer the ability to play as any of the dinosaurs, the Play As Dino mod on Steam opens up your worldview to that of a variety of dinosaurs.

Lego: Jurassic World brought the first four Jurassic Park movies together into a playable Lego game. While being cute and family-friendly, the game is also faithful to the film franchise, with all the notable characters to choose from when playing the main storyline. As you complete each level, look for the amber bricks (one per level), as each brick unlocks a playable dinosaur.

An open-world survival game, The Isle has over a dozen different dinosaurs for you to choose from in its roster. If you've ever watched Jurassic Park and wanted to see things from the dinosaurs' perspective, this game is maybe as close as you can get to being a dino left to roam an island with its various prey and predators.

Saurian is unique in that it puts you in the life of a dinosaur from start to finish. You hatch as a baby dinosaur and live your life through adulthood (hopefully) while avoiding predators and natural events that mimic prehistoric conditions.

In Beasts of Bermuda, you choose one of four dinosaur types to play airborne, aquatic, herbivore, or carnivore. The abilities and survival needs are different depending on which category you pick, giving you a variety of options and pros and cons for each. 17dc91bb1f
