One of the most recurring plot devices used in the X-Men franchise is death and resurrection, mostly in the sense of Jean Grey and her bond with the Phoenix. Though not as iconic as Jean and the Phoenix, many other X-Men characters have died and come back to life on occasion. Death and resurrection has become such a common occurrence in the X-books that the characters have mentioned on numerous occasions that they are not strangers to death or have made comments that death doesn't always have a lasting effect on them (for example, "In mutant heaven, there are no pearly gates, only revolving doors"). In the Marvel Universe, mutant rights is one of the hot controversial political topics and is something that is addressed numerous times in the X-books as a plot device. While some politicians like Valerie Cooper have legitimately tried to help the X-Men, most have made it their mission to discredit the X-Men in order to eliminate mutants once and for all. Straight from South by Southwest, Marvel Comics have pulled back the curtain on X-Men: From the Ashes, the new line-wide relaunch of the series that will begin this summer. Picking up from the end of the Krakoan Age, X-Men: From the Ashes will be centered around three flagship comics including: X-Men by Jed Mackay and Ryan Stegman; Uncanny X-Men by Gail Simone and David Marquez; and Exceptional X-Men by Eve L. Ewing and Carmen Carnero. In their announcement Marvel has confirmed that "each series will offer different explorations of the mutant mythos as they take Marvel's Merry Mutants into bold and untrodden territory."

In Marvel's press release, the publisher touts that these three new comics that will anchor the X-Men line "will approach the X-Men's vital mission with distinct and relevant perspectives while remaining faithful to the storytelling power of the mutant metaphor!" The Silver edition of X-Men #11 is reasonably easy to obtain and there are always a few copies of both #303 and #307 Gold editions available around the various auction sites. However, the gold edition of #297 is by far the hardest to get hold of and always demands a large premium over the other three. In the CGC census there are only 3 copies of #297 recorded - this could be one of the rarest X-Men comics around!
