Sławomir Kadrow THE SETTLEMENT COMPLEX IN TARGOWISKO ONE OF THE LEADING ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE "GOLDEN AGE" OF POLISH RESCUE ARCHAEOLOGY

The purpose of this article is to outline the legal, financial and organizational context of the phenomenon worthy of the name of the "golden age" of Polish rescue archeology. This period includes the greatest achievements in the protection and scientific elaboration of numerous archaeological sites threatened by investment activities in Poland. One of the leading examples of the achievements of Polish rescue archeology from that time are the excavations in the area of the settlement complex in Targowisko, near Krakow. The success of this project was determined by the appropriate level of financing, a large and structurally complex institution set up for its implementation (the Krakow Highway Research Team consortium) and proper formal and substantive supervision exercised by the Center for the Protection of Archaeological Heritage, obtaining the competences of the central state administration body. The global crisis in 2008 and the elimination of the central structures of rescue archeology in Poland (2007) led to the collapse of large consortia involved in conducting rescue research, the dominance of this market by small private companies and the general lowering of the research.
