Graduate Assistant Dental Program (GADP)
As a grad worker, you're automatically enrolled in the GADP if you hold a 25-67% appointment. The program provides up to $950 per year in dental coverage, with the specific benefit period depending on when your appointment starts (fall semester: Aug 16–Aug 15; spring semester: Jan 1–Aug 15). A key feature is the choice between two provider types: faculty members or fourth-year dental students. Choosing a student provider results in lower fees (about half the usual cost) and lower co-payments (10%-30%), while faculty care costs more but still offers significant savings. You can also enroll spouses or dependents for a $250 annual fee.
To use your coverage, simply call the Faculty Dental Practice at (312) 355-1401 to schedule an appointment. On your first visit, you'll need to register at Central Registration and show your valid picture ID. For most services, you'll pay a co-payment at the time of care, though many diagnostic and preventive procedures are covered at 100%. If you have a dental emergency, call the same number to schedule an appointment. Read the full UIC webpage about the GADP here.
Graduate Assistant Vision Care Benefit
Grad workers with a 25-67% appointment are automatically enrolled in the VSP vision care plan. The primary benefit is a comprehensive eye exam once every 12 months with $0 copay when you visit a VSP doctor. You will need your University Identification Number (UIN) when scheduling.
Beyond the free exam, the plan offers a 20% discount on complete pairs of prescription glasses (including lenses) and a 15% discount on professional services for contact lenses (though materials are at full cost). If you choose an out-of-network provider, the discount does not apply, but you can be reimbursed up to $25 for the exam by mailing your itemized receipts to VSP within six months. To find a VSP doctor, call VSP at 800-877-7195. Read UIC's webpage about VSP for more info.
