The Statistics and Data Science group in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Houston conducts research in modern statistical theory, methodology, computation, and interdisciplinary data science.

The PhD in Statistics and Data Science is a research-focused doctoral program that prepares students for careers in academia, industry, government, and other research-intensive environments.
Students receive rigorous training in probability, mathematical statistics, linear models, statistical computing, Bayesian statistics, statistical consulting, and modern data science. The curriculum also provides opportunities for advanced study in areas such as nonparametric statistics, time series, deep learning and neural networks, spatial statistics, uncertainty quantification, stochastic processes, optimization, and machine learning.
A central component of the program is original dissertation research conducted under the supervision of a faculty advisor. Students also participate in the Statistics Seminar and gain experience through statistical consulting and other research activities.
