UHS Orchestra Boosters

About the Boosters

The mission of the Urbana High School Orchestra Boosters (UHSOB) is to promote the interests and activities of the orchestra program. The UHSOB organizes the annual spring banquet, provides funds for music and folders, equipment purchases, and renting cellos and basses for classroom use. The Boosters also awards a scholarship to a graduating senior, and they work with Mr. Ayerdiz and orchestra parents to organize opportunities for students to travel and perform in venues outside of school.

The Boosters also support the Chamber Ensemble, which is a small, audition-only strings group that meets after school and performs at school and around the community. Auditions for this group will be held in September. This group is open to students who take Orchestra as a class, as well as to students who do not take Orchestra.

Another important function of the UHSOB is to provide a professional-quality performance uniform to each student. If you’ve had the pleasure of attending any UHS Orchestra performances, you’ve seen how fabulous the group looks on stage. The girls wear black skirts or pantaloons and black velvet tops, and the boys wear tuxedos, complete with cummerbunds and bowties. Uniforms are altered to fit students as needed, and they are dry-cleaned every year.

Strings Program Fee

To fund these activities, each student is required to pay a $100 Strings Program Fee. This fee may be paid in full at the beginning of the semester, or in two $50 installments, payable in September and November. For those families who cannot afford this fee due to financial hardship, we ask that you send a letter requesting an exemption. The payments may be brought to class and given to Mr. Ayerdiz. Cash and checks are both acceptable. Please make checks payable to “UHS Orchestra Boosters.” Students who do not make their payment or receive an exemption will not be fitted with a uniform.

Meetings

The Boosters meet each month of the school year. These meetings will be held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month.

Volunteering Opportunities

We would also like to invite you to become involved with the Orchestra by volunteering your time and talent. Our most urgent need is for help fitting the students with their concert wear. Every year, uniform volunteers come to class meetings to match students with pieces that fit them and take care of any alterations that may be required. We also would greatly appreciate a spring banquet volunteer, fundraising volunteers, and a trip coordinator volunteer.

Board Membership

Board members are elected by the parents of Orchestra students, and we hope some of you will consider serving on the board. It’s a great way to get involved in the school and to support activities that enrich the life of your student and of the entire school.
