This past Tuesday marked the inaugural meeting of the new Debate Club for Union High School. The meeting was led by Alan Mowle (UHS Senior / Club President) and Mr.Costello (UHS Teacher / Club Advisor). The room was filled beyond capacity with interested students. “The Debate Club is an incredible and well-known extracurricular that all college admission officers will take notice of,” said Mowle. “Starting this club fresh and with positive aspirations will benefit not just the students, but the school as a whole as well.”
The Club itself has many plans for the future. To name a few: Various debates in different formats, game/movie nights, rebuilding/teaching the middle school’s debate scene, competing against other schools, and more.

Two UHS students gave input on the meeting: seniors Jayden Ortiz and Sundas Ali Khan. Ortiz pointed out how this one has a "different approach" compared to other clubs. "I think it's cool that we can work on public speaking skills and having confidence when debating people with opposing views," said Ortiz as well. Khan added to this by saying, "I am going to be pursuing this club because I believe it will improve my speaking skills and boost my confidence when addressing someone in public." She also added how it was made obvious that this was going to be a "no-nonsense club." This point was a goal of Mowle when presenting his slides presentation to the room full of students. To make sure they knew that this club would be full of fun times, as long as there is equal cooperation and commitment.
The advisor, Mr.Costello, deemed the meeting a huge “success” and the future could not be brighter for the club. Stay tuned for future blogs to keep up with the law & debate scene at UHS.
