This past Monday, the UHS Debate Club hosted another thought-provoking debate. Two groups, 8 and 9, engaged in a structured discussion on whether banning or heavily restricting books is justifiable. Despite the complexity of the topic, both teams showcased impressive research and critical thinking skills.
The debate featured strong arguments on both sides. The affirmative team argued that certain book restrictions protect young readers from harmful content. In contrast, the opposing team emphasized the dangers of censorship and the importance of free speech and exposure. The discussion remained engaging and respectful throughout, with compelling rebuttals and well-supported points, and team 9 ultimately was voted the winner.

One member who stood out this past Monday was Filipe, who made an impressive debut in his first debate on book banning. Despite being new to the format, Filipe displayed excellent public speaking skills, remained composed under pressure, and confidently tackled challenging questions from both the opposing team and the audience. His ability to articulate his points clearly and defend his stance earned him the well-deserved title of 2/10/25 Member of the Meeting!
This meeting was yet another success, further proving the growing competitiveness and enthusiasm within the club. As we inch closer to the finale of the Debate Club’s first internal tournament, the stakes are higher than ever. Who will emerge as the ultimate champion?
