This past Monday, the Debate Club hosted its second official debate. Two internal groups within the club, 2 and 3, represented the affirmative and negative to their prompt. That prompt was, "Affirmative Action is Discriminatory". After about an hour of debate and deliberation, a verdict was reached, and the discussion overall was a success. The meeting was the first to be held in a new room rather than the cafeteria, perfect for a debate setting.

The negative side of the debate won, and their faces were overjoyed, knowing that the hard work they put into their debate paid off made them very happy. Mr. Costello announced everyone as judges of the discussion, and the competition between the two teams was heavy. Two judges, Madison Sappe (10th grade) & Ysalba Tejada ( 9th grade), stood out prominently among the rest. Giving good feedback to the two teams was these two judges' great qualities. Their feedback not only provided insight but also tips for future teams debating. These two are also the 9th and 10th grade class representatives, so hearing from these two was a great honor. Overall, the debates ran smoothly, with Mr. Costello timing everything, ensuring everything was on the right track.

Debate Club Member and UHS Junior Aesha, was asked by our media officer Sundas Ali, "How do you think the UHS Debate Club is handling the debates so far?" " Aesha stated "Overall, it is very good". When asked "What have you learned as you watch the students debate? What tips did you note down for the future?" She highlighted that it has taught her to be "more confident when presenting in class, knowing that it is okay to make mistakes and hearing about topics I've never known before." The club has helped Aesha to be more "prepared" and to "fully know what I'm researching and talking about."
The debate was once again a success, as advisor Mr.Costello reflected on how it went "very, very well", and the future of the UHS Debate Club still shines as bright as ever, stay tuned for future blogs! Thank you to Azi Solis and Domenick Nuzzo for the great photography, and congratulations to media officer Sundas Ali on officially becoming an editor for the UHS Law & Debate Journal!
