Organization Description:

Founded in 1978, Stages has grown to become Houston’s sixth largest nonprofit performing arts producer and the largest outside the downtown theater district. Stages produces plays and narrate stories that invite everyone to live more deeply and love more boldly. We produce a broad scope of plays and musicals, ranging from jukebox musicals and family entertainment to world premieres and new work by emerging writers. Performances are year-round with an average of 12 productions and 75,000+ visitors each season. In January 2020, the new $35.4 million three-theater home, The Gordy, opened it's doors. Stages is a welcoming, collaborative culture that encourages each staff member to take initiative, share ideas and help shape the organization.

Primary Function:

The apprentice will learn something new and exciting every day through work in each discipline of technical theater, such as: building scenery, painting, hanging and focusing lights, patching in audio cable, circuiting lighting fixtures, wiring LEDs, building props and costumes, etc. Intern will be present at some Technical Rehearsals, and be assigned various duties in support of each production.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Report to the Production Manager and Technical Director for duties as assigned daily

  • Build props and paint scenery

  • Assist in the Audio, Visual, and Lighting Departments by hanging and focusing lights, patching audio cable, circuiting lighting fixtures

  • Create costumes and accessories

  • Check in with Inclusion, Engagement and Training Director on learning needs and aspirations

  • Attend introductory advisory meetings with Inclusion, Engagement, and Training Director

Preferred qualifications:

  • Six months to a year experience in Technical Theater

  • Has the ability to frequently carry, push and lift various theater equipment

  • Possess a passion for working on a team and has no fear of asking questions if needed
