Organization Description:

Community leaders established Houston SPCA nearly 100 years ago to meet the needs of animals in the Gulf region, and we have always put their care and well-being first in everything we do. Because of that commitment, we helped nearly 60,000 companion animals, equine and farm animals, and native wildlife in 2021. Without Houston SPCA, many of those animals would not have been rescued, rehabilitated, or rehomed.

Primary Function:

The intern will play a key role in supporting vital aspects of the Leadership Giving Team (Team) by assisting with special events, acknowledgments, and information for Houston SPCA’s donors and prospects, including but may not be limited to Recognition Programs, Events, Corporations, Foundations, Capital Campaign, Major Giving, and Planned Giving.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the integrity of data and record all correspondence according to best practices

  • Respond to appropriate email inquiries or mail information as appropriate

  • Draft acknowledgments and correspondence for “special gifts” as directed by Team

  • Participate in special projects as directed by Team

  • Coordinate all aspects of the Recognition Program: from brick and plaque ordering, to maintaining the opportunity list, to sending “In Memory/Honor of” cards and letters

  • Manage details and tasks for Houston SPCA events as required.

  • Call to thank donors for their gifts to Houston SPCA

  • Represent the Houston SPCA by providing excellent customer service and focus.

  • Protect all confidential information, including donors, clients, animals, and internal communications.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Demonstrates excellence in organizational skills and attention to detail, ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and drive projects to completion

  • Demonstrate an ability and eagerness to learn, be resourceful and proactive, adapt to changes, and be able to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Ability to use good judgment, take initiative, anticipate issues, and make recommendations in resolving problems

  • Ability to establish and maintain a productive working relationship with internal and external stakeholders and work well in a team environment

  • Must professionally represent the Houston SPCA in all situations with the public, donors, volunteers, and staff

  • Exceptional written, proofreading, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills

  • Passion for the mission of the Houston SPCA

  • Able to drive, stand, bend, squat, walk, and talk for up to eight hours a day; able to lift to 25 pounds

  • Basic knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Occasional exposure to animals and related issues
