Organization Description:

The mission of the Greater Northside Chamber of Commerce is to advocate for the development and interest of businesses and community located on the greater northside part of Houston, TX and to act as a unified voice to ensure that any development promotes a positive economic impact in the area. The Chamber will promote economic progress and quality of life in the greater northside of the City of Houston and foster a climate in which business, commerce and industry flourish. We enable the opportunity for businesses and organizations to network, build relationships and partnership through our programs, events and other initiatives. We are a growing chamber of commerce, with a diverse membership across many industries, from finance, real estate, restaurants, transportation, government officials, and small businesses selling various products and services.

Primary Function:

The intern will support the development, coordination, and management of various Chamber programs and events, and maintain consistent communication with Chamber members. Chamber events can consist of board meetings, networking/social events and educational programs that increase our member’s professional development. This position will provide exposure and networking opportunities with a diverse chamber of commerce members, as well as increase soft-skills such as time-management, communication, public speaking, and organizational skills.

The intern will also help maintain an up-to-date membership roster and conduct administrative tasks such as updating website information, producing branding materials/advertisements for events for social media distribution, fielding chamber correspondence (e-mail communications platforms, i.e., Constant Contact, social media messengers, and federal Chamber email). This position will develop a person’s creativity, attention to detail, and marketing abilities. Other professional and leadership opportunities may arise, such as assisting with grant writing, helping with developing financial reports or leading parts of board meetings.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop, coordinate and manage Chamber events

  • Communicate with Chamber members to identify guest speakers for events

  • Secure and reserve venues for event/programs

  • Send membership notice of events via email, newsletter, and website

  • Produce flyers, other announcements, for social media posts

  • Attend networking activities, events & programs to support setting up/down events

  • Build agendas for board meetings with chair of the board communication with Chamber

  • Communicate with Chamber members in-person/virtually to learn more about chamber member needs, make connections of services/opportunities for partnerships among members, and develop a rapport with members

  • Create content for Constant Contact newsletter, website news articles and more to maintain members informed of member services and events

  • Manage general Chamber email/social media platforms to field questions, identify potential speakers, and create newsletter, website, and social media content

Other Professional and Leadership Opportunities

  • The Chamber prepares and submits grant applications and reports to foundations, corporations and government agencies to bring in more funding opportunities for member partnerships. This individual may help with grant writing.

  • The Chamber Board Chair/Treasurer prepares monthly financial reports (profits & loss, balance, sheet, etc) for board members. This individual may help with putting together this financial report.

  • The Chamber events and board meetings are opportunities for public speaking, leading discussions, and facilitating meetings. This individual may assist with these tasks.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Majors: Business, Social Science, Political Science, Arts & Humanities, or any others in which a student wants to enhance the skills mentioned above

  • Education level: Undergraduate student

  • Excellent communication skills and professional demeanor

  • Ability to work a primarily self-directed, flexible work schedule

  • Strong organization, multi-tasking, and time management skills

  • Working knowledge of computers and database systems

  • Reliable transportation to day and evening meetings; occasional weekend events/meetings may be necessary
