Founded in 1992 as Friends of Hermann Park, Hermann Park Conservancy is a nonprofit citizens’ organization dedicated to the stewardship and improvement of Hermann Park – today and for generations to come. Through a public-private partnership with the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, Hermann Park Conservancy raises millions of dollars each year to enhance and maintain the Park. The Conservancy also manages the design of projects, and then shares construction costs with the City of Houston. Thanks to the generous financial support of foundations, corporations, and individuals, the Conservancy has raised more than $122 million for improvement projects in Hermann Park. The Conservancy also oversees programs focused on visitor services, conservation and stewardship, tree care, and operations and maintenance of the McGovern Centennial Gardens. .

Primary Function:

Hermann Park Conservancy (HPC) relies on interns and volunteers to help with day-to-day operations as well as special events that support the Conservancy’s mission. HPC offers opportunities for individuals to assist with special event planning, execution and follow-up. This is a valuable opportunity to grow your customer service, event planning and organizational skills through hands-on experience while working in a professional non-profit office environment. Under the direction of the Volunteer and Programs Administrator, the Special Events Assistant is responsible for supporting various events including Run in the Park (Fun Run), Park to Port Bike Ride, Houston Rockets Dog Walk and HPC Kite Festival.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work with Volunteer and Programs Administrator to coordinate event logistics

  • Assist with special event planning, promotion, and on-site execution including design, set up, and tear down

  • Maintain up-to-date event documents including site-schedule forms and action plans

  • Procure and organize supplies for events

  • Answer the phone and ensures messages are delivered in a timely manner, and answers visitors’ questions

  • Assist HPC staff with paperwork, filing, data entry, mail, sorting, and greeting guests

  • Help HPC with preparing materials and occasional mailings for special events

  • Attend to other duties as assigned

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience or be willing to work in an office/customer service environment

  • Have a willingness to help in a pleasant and professional manner with visitors in person and on the phone

  • Computer literate with a basic knowledge of Excel and database input (Raiser’s Edge experience a plus)

  • Proficient using the latest versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint

  • Aptitude to learn other event, email and survey tools

  • Display patience, have a friendly attitude, mature presence, be courteous and a team player

  • Fantastic customer service ethic, high expectations for quality, and able to work alone and un-supervised periodically

  • Maintain strict confidentiality and discretion

  • Be passionate about making a difference in your community

  • Excellent interpersonal skills both in person and by phone, with high professionalism

  • Well organized, dedicated, confident, energetic, and creative.
